AFC Wimbledon

History- Wimbledon FC were founded in 1889 as Wimbledon Old Centrals FC. They were based at Plough Lane from 1912 until 1991. They were a Non-League club for most of that time, they won eight Isthmain League titles and the FA Amateur Cup in 1963. After three successive Southern League titles between 1975 and 1977 they were elected into the Football League and quickly rose to the first division in 1986. Their greatest success came in 1988 when they won the FA Cup, beating League Champions Liverpool at Wembley. They are one of only three clubs to have won both the FA Cup and the FA Amateur Cup.

After the Taylor report in 1991which recommended all seater stadiums, Wimbledon had to ground share with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. They remained in the First Division/Premier League until 2000. In 2001 the club decided to move to Milton Keynes. This was a deeply unpopular move with the Wimbledon fans and football fans in general. In 2002 a group of supporters, appalled by the decision, formed their own club, AFC Wimbledon, to which the majority of fans switched their allegiance. A club called Wimbledon played their home games in Milton Keynes from 2003 to 2004. After 2004 they changed their name to Milton Keynes. It was agreed in 2006 that all the trophies and honours won by Wimbledon would be returned to Wimbledon and records amended as such.

AFC Wimbledon (the Dons) moved through the non-league pyramid and gained promotion to the Football League in 2011. They have spent every season since in League 1 or 2. But have moved back to their own stadium in Plough Lane.
