In 2020 a local young person came forward with a plan to make the verge along Barnwell Road safer for people and wildlife. Over the next few months there will be biodiversity improvement works happening along Barnwell Verge outside Galfrid School. What is happening and why Abbey People has been working on the Barnwell Verge: Seeds of Hope project for over 4 years, to make Barnwell Road verge safer for school children, parents, local residents and Cambridge United supporters. Parking on the verge is a safety hazard to young children and residents on Barnwell Road during both school drop-off & pick-up times and on match days. Safety of children, residents and Cambridge United supporters is of key importance and at the heart of the project. The project aims to make the grass verge outside Galfrid School safer and more attractive for local residents, while improving biodiversity by planting wildflowers, flowering bulbs, native shrubs, and installing large logs and dead hedges to create habitats for wildlife. This will limit the areas for unsafe parking along the verge. |
What next
Work on Barnwell Verge will be starting this month
Contractors will be onsite Tuesday morning (4th March) to start marking out the project.
The work will still be done in stages along the verge
Updates will be available as and when we have more information
