This afternoon we welcome the supporters, officials and playing staff of MK Dons to the Abbey Stadium. Last weeks news about the Abbey Stadium freehold returning to the club was wonderful to read and hear. The hurt and pain of the original sale was immense and at the time it changed people lives forever. The guilt of allowing it to happen has always been there too. Hopefully, going forwards it will allow the club to feel whole again. We are all now able to focus on both the present and future without carrying past baggage any longer on our shoulders. We will always be indebted to those who have enabled it to happen and to Grosvenor Property UK for being such supported landlords over the years
The Fan Engagement Results were published on the 24th February. Last year we came third, this year we improved to finish second. Exeter once again finished top. If we or any club wish to top them it would require major changes. Therefore, I am really pleased with these results. Commenting on the best performing club Exeter City, Kevin Rye said, “Exeter City just keeps getting it right. It’s not just embedded in ownership, but in culture and attitude. That applies to most of the best performing clubs. But we mustn’t be complacent: if you don’t look after the culture, it dies, and a structure isn’t enough on its own.” This result along with the first Family Excellence report have been positive following covid, however, it is only a start and a lot of improvements can still be made. Fan Engagement has many different threads to it and we need to be constantly looking at improvements in each area, however small. Everything is possible. We are also receiving a lot of positive feedback from away supporters and clubs for our pre-match interaction with them. We are contacting clubs and their supporter groups wherever possible before and after every matches. We want to be known as a friendly and welcoming club. We want away supporters to come to the Abbey Stadium. The Fan Engagement Index for the 2020/2021 season was released by Think Fan Engagement, and it shows that the entire Premier League is struggling to break into the top-twenty, with only Everton present for the season. None of the six involved in the ill-fated European Super League project fared well during the Covid lockout. season that saw football experience what life would really be like without fans. Some clubs appear to be getting their houses in order in advance of what could be an independent regulator for English football following Tracy Crouch’s Fan Led Review: Liverpool and their biggest supporters’ group, Spirit of Shankly, are about to conclude a comprehensive agreement to lock-in structured Fan Engagement, with Manchester United reconfiguring theirs. In the 1990’s Cambridge United were one of the most proactive clubs with the introduction of the Cambridge United Supporters Association. Since 2000 the Supporters Trust CFU havw been in place. Fan Engagement has further strengthened with the recent introduction the Supporters Panel CUSP and Amber Belles. The communications and engagement supporters’ groups has over the years been positive. Everyone benefits from this dialogue. It really does need to be constructive and positive. The first Fan Engagement Index was published for 2018/2019 season, and scores clubs in the top four divisions of English Football using publicly available data on their Dialogue, Governance and Transparency in Fan Engagement. Clubs were also asked for their comment on the data collected and provide feedback.
