No moles but a ferret on the pitch

21/2/2019

Picture
With the break in the home fixtures following the match against Tranmere, it has provided Ian with the opportunity to carry out some much needed work on the pitch.

It is the first time since we have been helping out at the Abbey that the ferret has been used.

The side of the pitch in front of the  Main Stand had reached the point when it needed some much needed care and attention.

The ferret just ruffs the ground up enough to give it a perfect tilth to put grass seed down.

It’s extremely hard work to use. The sheets are on the pitch to provide some heat for the seed to germinate

Hopefully, by the next match the grass seed will have started to appear.

If you are traveling to Cheltenham on Tuesday evening we hope you will find the following information helpful.

Cheltenham Town Football Club website www.ctfc.com

SatNav: GL52 5NA

Address:
Jonny-Rocks Stadium
Whaddon Road
Cheltenham
Gloucestershire GL52 5NA

Main switchboard: 01242 573558
Email: info@ctfc.com

Jonn-Rocks Stadium   https://www.ctfc.com/club/jonnyrocksstadium/

We have been informed that it will be un-allocated seating

The club bar is open to home and away fans alike. They serve an array of food from filled rolls to basket meals (Scampi, sausages, burgers + chips). They also serve your standard lagers and ciders et
c. Plus Bath Ales.

Nearby to the ground, we can recommend the Sudeley Arms (Prestbury Road), The Feathered Fish (Winchcombe Street) and The Kemble Brewery Inn (Fairview Street), The Kemble is more of an Ale pub, so probably a good place for some of your "quieter" followers. Food wise, there is a nice chip shop on Whaddon Road itself and another one further up Whaddon Road near Sainsburys. There is a Petrol Station on Prestbury Road with an M&S, and the Feathered Fish does bar meals and pizza's as far as I am aware.

Further afield, the town centre has two Wetherspoons bars (The Bank House & The Moon Under Water) and a selection of other pubs and the usual food outlets (although McDonalds is closed for refurbishment). And for the Ale officionados amoungst you, near the station there is the Daya Brewery.
The station is a 2 mile walk, so leave plenty of time or get a taxi. Also you can get the D or E bus into town, then the A up to Whaddon Road. The A picks up outside the Bank House.
Driving wise, from the North it is M5 junction 10 > A4019 into town > then follow the signs for Cheltenham Town Football Club. From the South it is M5 Junction 11 > A40 into town > then follow the signs for Cheltenham Town Football Club"

As for disabled access, this is from the club website - "Away disabled supporters who require a wheelchair space need to book these in advance. This can be done by contacting their own Ticket Office (if allocation has been sent) or alternatively contacting the Ticket Office at Cheltenham Town Football Club on 01242 573558 option 1."

Parking - "We have a main car park at the Jonny-Rocks Stadium which is located at the back of the Autovillage Main Stand.
Places are available at a charge of £5 and can be booked over the phone by calling 01242 588101.
Please note: this cannot be done on a matchday. If you would like to pay on the day of the game, it is still at a charge of £5 cash on the main gate, however, it is on a first come, first served basis.
The car park on a Saturday matchday is open at 12noon and on an evening game from 5.30pm. For busier games the service on a matchday may not be available so please always book in advance to avoid disappointment.
There is also another car park which is located at the back of the Colin Farmer Stand. This car park it located in the Parklands Community Centre and is also available on a first come, first served basis on a matchday."
For reference - Parklands Community Centre is on Wymans Road (GL52 5PR)

Street parking is restricted on roads directly adjacent to the ground.

City v United Memories - What are yours?

17/2/2019

Picture
Driving round Mitchams Corner, I sometimes look down Corona Road and imagine how busy it must have been in the 50 and 60's when the two sides City and United were going head to head.

Did Corona Road have turnstiles at the end of it or is it something I am imagining?

I can only remember access via Milton Road. I think the supporters club was on the left hand side as you went in

Can you remember matches between the sides at Milton Road? If so, what are your memories?

The SLO Role part 5 - Helping the Away Club Supporters

11/2/2019

Picture
As part of my role as SLO, I have to make an Away club's visit here as safe and enjoyable as possible.

In my blog SLO part 3 I spoke of how we contact Away teams in advance and try to ensure their match day goes smoothly. Recently after the match against Northampton a visiting supporter failed to return to the coach for the trip home.

The search for him involved the emergency services. Ian Darler and Andy Pickard along with the Police searched the stadium and also the common for him late into the evening. Fortunately, the gentleman was found safe and sound having returned home via a lift. This time it ended happily. It was good to know that everything was in place and the procedures ensured the searches were carried out in an organised and systematic manner.

The only downside was the romantic meal Lisa Darler had planned for Ian was ruined.

After every match a search of the ground is undertaken to ensure that nobody has collapsed or fallen ill.

In addition I meet with our Club's Safety Officer Andy Pickard  to understand ground regulations and safety measures. I attend pre-match briefings when I can - but sometimes the role of SLO requires me to greet coaches, meet fans and sponsors, and be available in the NRE, Main Stand and Habbin all at the same time which can be a challenge

Hopefully as the role of SLO becomes more understood, I will find more willing helpers to work with me to make fans' match day experience as good as it can be. Sarah and Simon King help me on matchdays and their help is invaluable filling in wherever needed and doing checks for me around the ground before and during matches.

Margaret Pearson also helps by contacting the clubs in advance of match days to pass on information for those coming to the Abbey and also to provide information for our supporters when visiting other clubs

Most clubs are starting to have SLO teams carrying out the role required. Others have a single point of contact and are employees of the club. Either way the role is becoming more and more a part of the match day.

Don't forget I am able to be contacted by e-mail: dave.matthew-jones@cambridge-united.co.uk or  leaving a message for me at the club: 01223 566500 or by talking to me as you see me around the ground.

If anyone would like to volunteer their services on a match day please do contact me.

CAMBRIDGE UNITED FANS’ PARLIAMENT

CAMBRIDGE UNITED FANS’ PARLIAMENT

Gina Parkin is part of the working group researching the Cambridge United fans parliament.  This is her progress report.

A lot has happened since our last update.  Given the positive reaction from supporters to the concept of a fans parliament, the working group recommended to the Club that we should proceed with setting it up.  Just before Christmas the Club announced that it agreed.  Since then we have been working on a draft constitution for the fans parliament, based on what we have found out about other club’s fans parliament and supporters’ boards, and on our own ideas.

The constitution will set out the purpose of the fans parliament and the ground rules under which it will operate.  In summary the draft constitution says:

·       The aim of the Fans’ Parliament is to facilitate trust between Cambridge United FC and Cambridge United fans by increasing transparency in the way the Club operates and makes decisions;

·       The Fans’ Parliament will be formed of a maximum of 11 Cambridge United fans, elected by their fellow supporters.  Elections to the Fans’ Parliament will be held every two years;

·       The Fans’ Parliament will meet with Directors and officials of Cambridge United FC at least four times a year.  Cambridge United FC will host Fans’ Parliament communications on the official club website and in the official match day programme, but the Fans’ Parliament will be free to set up its own website if it wishes;

·       The Fans’ Parliament will elect a Chair and Vice-Chair, and will hold separate, internal meetings as frequently as it sees fit.  The Fans’ Parliament will hold an AGM, open to all fans, once a year.  It will publish a short annual report at the end of each football season.

It’s important to stress the constitution is still a draft, and that some aspects could be subject to change, but this should give you a feel as to how it will work.  For the time being we are still using the name “fans parliament” but, as we have said before, there are lots of other options.  “Fans Council” is quite popular, but it has an awkward acronym – CUFC!

The working group met with United Director Godric Smith in January to discuss the draft constitution.  He was happy with it and then shared it with the United

Board of Directors to get their views.  I’m very pleased to report that the Board has now also given the draft constitution the green light.
We will now convene a meeting of all the supporters that have expressed an interest in being part of the fans parliament (21 at the last count) to discuss the constitution.  Once we have a constitution that everyone is happy with we will hold the elections, hopefully in March.

Its not too late to express an interest in the fans parliament – and to be part of Cambridge United history!  Just contact the working group via cfuinbox@btinternet.com or drop by the CFU caravan.

COYU!

Gina Parkin

On behalf of the Fans’ Parliament Working Group
