Match Preview

MATCH PREVIEW | STEVENAGE
It’s almost derby day for the U’s who come up against the hottest team in Sky Bet League Two at the moment, local rivals Stevenage at Cambs Glass Stadium this weekend.

Following a gritty win over Cheltenham Town on the road last Saturday, Shaun Derry’s men are on the hunt for consecutive League victories that could propel them closer to the top seven, but face an immense task in the form of Stevenage.

The U’s look likely to be boosted by the return of Liam O’Neil following his grade 1 muscle tear, whilst Barry Corr and Adam McGurk both continue to make progress with their respective recoveries.

PROGRAMME PREVIEW | STEVENAGE – GREG TAYLOR
Take a sneak peek at tomorrow’s match day programme, as Greg Taylor reflects on his display in midfield last week at Cheltenham.

The full back has also signed 300 copies which will be distributed randomly around the Cambs Glass Stadium, so pick up your copy for just £3 for the chance to win!

Programme Preview:

With James Dunne and Liam O’Neil ruled out through injury and Max Clark suspended, Taylor was selected to protect United’s back four at Whaddon Road and did so impeccably producing a man of the match performance as the U’s ensured a clean sheet in Gloucestershire.

Cambridge United Club Chaplain - Stuart Wood is there to help.

Stuart Wood is there to help.

Picture
I have had the privilege of serving as the Cambridge United Club Chaplain since the start of the 2005/06 season and during that time I have had the opportunity to visit fans in hospital, and sometimes at home, when they have been unwell or had surgery. I also make myself available for people who just want to talk through personal issues and need a listening ear. As always, the great challenge is finding out where I'm needed and getting the details passed on to me. Once I have them, I can act.

It has also been an honour to help many families through the loss of loved ones. Sometimes this has been in the officiating at a funeral. I have led services for family members of directors, staff, players and fans and I have led, or been involved with, the services for a number of ex-players. It is an honour and privilege to share these very personal and intimate moments with people.

By the way, I have also done a few weddings, so it isn’t all end of life care and support.

If I can be of any help to anyone – with a visit or a phone call, at a funeral or a wedding, or in any other way then please let me know.  I can be contacted on  07770 792 371 or by e-mail Stuart@barnwellbaptistchurch.org.uk

Pardon my Language from the Amber News

Pardon my Language

Picture
If there’s one thing that really gets my dander up it’s being patronised. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to be treated with consideration and respect but I’m not a delicate flower that needs to be apologised to when enthusiasm draws foul language from the lips of those standing close by me. After all, I wouldn’t be there if I had delicate sensibilities, would I? There are, however, a few observations I might make about the facilities on offer at grounds that might make the experience a bit less ‘basic’.

Would it be too much to ask for an external door for the toilet blocks? I know we have one at the Abbey but without a handle on the inside........? Maybe then a little heater could make a visit less traumatic? After all, there are only 2 toilets usually and it is often such a tiny space- it wouldn’t cost much would it?  I understand why owners might not want to have glass mirrors in toilets but surely there are modern alternatives? And don’t get me started on loo paper......

The best grounds I’ve visited have done their best to treat women as equals who have different needs. Friendly stewards making you feel safe and welcome. Female stewards to approach you with a smile and sense of humour when they need to search bags or, increasingly at away grounds, bodies!

Some away grounds seem positively hostile. The fans are openly abusive and the stewards dour and aggressive. I can’t help thinking the two things are connected. The best away ground we went to was on a very cold day. We were invited into their hospitality area and given cake and indoor toilets!!! Well done Carlisle United and less well done Manchester United.

Speaking of cake, catering at grounds is obviously quite varied too. At some grounds it barely exists – not good if you’ve travelled a long way and were relying on finding food at the ground! Our ground has improved considerably in the last year in this area. Consistently hot food and drinks are available before and during the game. If I was being ‘picky’ though, I’d suggest a bit more variety and maybe something a bit ‘greener’? Not everyone is seeking emergency carbohydrates!

Liz Stephen

Rail seating licensed in League One and Two

Rail seating licensed in League One and Two

The prospect of safe standing being introduced to top-flight English football has moved a step closer after the government body responsible for ground safety granted a request from the Football League to permit rail seating in 21 grounds that are not subject to all-seater requirements.

This means League One and League Two clubs can install rail seats if they wish - the English Football League says "the symbolic value of this decision should not be overlooked."

Writing to EFL clubs at the end of last week, chief executive of the EFL Shaun Harvey said: "The symbolic value of this decision should not be overlooked as I believe it demonstrates an encouraging direction of travel that will hopefully lead to further progress on our other aims in the period ahead.

I’ve heard it all over the years from the Amber News

12/3/2017

Picture
Yes, I’ve heard it all over the years, “Go home and get hubby’s dinner on,” and, “Haven’t you got some ironing to do?” are some of the polite things said to women both as supporters and officials.

I first attended CUFC, with my Dad, in 1970 when they played their last non-league game and waited for confirmation of their promotion into the football league. I was hooked. I loved watching live football and pestered my Dad to take me regularly. Having two sons gave me an excellent excuse to attend every week and take them on away matches with the Junior U’s. They were the glory days when we teetered on the edge of being in the inaugural Premier League. I also continued through the dark days of being hours away from the club being closed down by Inland Revenue and, finally, a brilliant day out at Wembley, when we were back in the league.

Over the years the number of women attending has slowly increased as clubs become more aware that there is a whole section of the community who may like to come along. The improvements in women’s football has definitely helped, I feel; increase both awareness and interest in the game. Don’t assume women don’t like or understand football. I know several men who hate football, so conversely, why shouldn’t women enjoy following a club and watching games?

I have never played football. I only ever managed a kick about with the kids. Even at school I hated running about in the cold to play hockey. I was a hopeless sportsperson! I haven’t been taught the finer points of tactics or formations but does that matter? I understand certain elements of sport such as team work, positive encouragement and personal development. All these elements are common to many areas of working. Is football so very different?

Therefore, despite being female, a role I feel I can excel at is being a supporter!  I can honestly say I’m never happier than being on the terraces and shouting encouragement to the team in black and amber and I hope to continue for many more years.

Fans' director Dave Matthew-Jones explains how Cambridge United are encouraging football for all.

12/3/2017

Picture
Football clubs nowadays have influence in many areas of the community. One area where they can really make a difference is in the welfare of their supporters and those living in the local community. When I first became involved in the supporters movement, the concept was called ‘The Club is the Hub’. It was about Social Responsibility, Welfare, Education, Good Neighbouring, Fitness and Equality. The aim was to grow the club within the community, making it so significant that the community could not do without it. It was also seen as a vehicle which could bring communities together. Since then football clubs have done a great deal to achieve those aims through their community programmes.

It was recently reported how Walking Football could help those who have had strokes. It can also be a method to encourage over 50’s and those with mobility problems take part in physical exercise. There is also the social aspect to the game that encourages interaction between the players on the day and prevents people from becoming isolated. The game is open to all abilities and is also seeing a growth in numbers of ladies taking part at many clubs.

Cambridge United runs Walking Football sessions each Thursday between 11am and midday. It costs five pounds. The club also organises weekly sessions for the following football-related activities:
·       Frame football,
·       Girls only pan-disability football,
·       Down's Syndrome football,
·        Ambulant Cerebral Palsy football,
·       Autistic Spectrum Disorder & Learning Difficulties/Disabilities football

If you would like to know more about these events or know someone who would please contact phil.mullen@cambridge-united.co.uk Phil will provide details of times, costs and locations.

Supporters Trusts, in my view, are still as important as ever. During the past year, there has been an increase in the number of clubs where supporters are in conflict with their owners over the way in which clubs are run.  At Cambridge United we are fortunate that everyone is working together in the growth of the club. There may sometimes be differences in views, opinions and approach; however many of us recall when this was not the case and a return to those days would not benefit anyone. CFU will be holding its AGM at the club on the 20th March with Shaun Derry, Dave Doggett and Jez George in attendance. This will provide our members with the opportunity to ask questions of those in charge.

In the last article I mentioned the matchday programme. I am pleased to see that the league table is now included along with a new article called Past Times written by Andrew Bennet, whose knowledge of club is phenomenal and never stops amazing me. Future programmes will also include more statistics.

Have you noticed the team sheets around the ground on match days? I have started putting them up after 2pm, when the team news is released. They are situated at the entrance of the Habbin, in the Dublin Suite, at the CFU van and the programme hut behind the NRE.

This month I will be addressing issues concerning the how the winning numbers for the half time 50/50 tickets are announced, so that everyone at the match can know whether they have won before they leave the ground. If you miss the numbers, they are always posted at the CFU van.

As SLO I upload to the CFU blog page match day details for our travelling supporters, usually using information from the away club’s SLO. The EFL is now looking at improving facilities for supporters, both at home and when they travel away and is sending mystery shoppers to clubs to inform feedback on the facilities, communications and match day experience.

Traveling to the Match

Brunton Park  (postcode CA1 1LL) is served by the nearby M6 motorway and for fans travelling by car/coach to the game please leave at junction 43 (A69) and head west – the main supporter’s car park is situated on the right hand side and is on the East Side of the ground. The entrance to this is at the third set of traffic lights having left the motorway, opposite the Foreways shop. Parking charges are £2.50 for cars, £10 for mini buses and £15 for coaches.

For those arriving at Carlisle Railway Station the ground is roughly a 20 minute walk – please leave the station and walk straight ahead to the crescent, follow this round to the left and when you reach Nando’s turn right and then you are on Warwick Road that leads to the ground which you will see on the left hand side with the club shop situated at the main entrance. The entrance for away fans seating is at the next entrance on the left. For those who do not want to walk from the station taxis though are available across the road to the left as you leave the station.

The supporter’s coaches are parked adjacent to the Pioneer East stand at the northern end to allow a quick getaway.

Those fans arriving by coach will be met on arrival time. The away concourse will be open for fans from 1.30pm. However we are more than happy for your fans to head round from the away east side of the ground to the west side and use our Sunset Lounge which is open from 12.30pm or sooner if required where there is a big screen showing the live match that day. The club will be selling pies, burgers and hot dogs and in addition at the bar they can also purchase coffee etc... Please note as this is an old stand access is by stairs and there is no wheelchair access. (A catering van is also outside and food can be purchased and then taken into the Sunset Suite). You may also use the adjacent Sporting Inn bar as well.

SHAREHOLDERS MEETING REPORT

Chairman Dave Doggett was joined by Finance Director Steve Chamberlain and CEO Jez George to deliver a positive overview of the Club's accounts at the Annual Shareholders Meeting, with a surplus budgeted for 2016/17.

Shareholders were informed there had been a growth in revenue of 20% year on year from 2014/15, excluding the exceptional income generated from the FA Cup fixtures against Manchester United.

The Club is expecting to make a profit of approximately £1 million from its Business Operation in 2016/17, with Jez George highlighting a notable increase in the income generated from sponsorship and hospitality of 70% year to date compared to 2015/16. The growth in all aspects of the Club's Business Operation, and increases to central funding, has therefore reduced the reliance on gate receipts, which in 2016/17 is forecast to account for just 20% of turnover.

The EFL are running a number of regional Fan Forum Events throughout the 2016/17 season, offering fans the chance to listen to and engage with the EFL, Sky Sports, special guests, and former referee Chris Foy (currently senior coach at Professional Game Match Officials). The evening event is interactive and opens up a number of opportunities for supporter debate.

If you would like to attend the upcoming London session at SKY’s Head Office -  Sky Central, in Isleworth, on  Monday 20th March 2017. SKY have kindly agreed to host the London forum, and part of the evening will also enable fans in attendance the chance to see behind-the-scenes at the Head Office of EFL’s broadcasting partner.

The backdrop to the event is the new joint commitment by the EFL and Sky Sports which focuses on ensuring minimal disruption for fans with regards to the rescheduling of fixtures for TV. The EFL also considers it important to proactively engage with supporters on a number of matters relating to match officials, recent changes to the Laws of the Game, introduction of the new Match Officials Select Group 2, and the perception of referees and their assistants within the EFL.

The London Fan Forum session will be run as follows:

Venue:             Sky Central, Grant Way, Isleworth, TW7 5QD
Date:                Monday 20th March - 6.30pm arrival, 10pm finish (approx.)
Refreshments:  Complimentary food and refreshments available
Guests:            EFL, SKY Sports, Chris Foy (PGMOL) and special guest.

If you would like to go to the event please contact me - d.mattthewjones@btinternet.com as I will need to put your name forward
