The 100yearsofcoconuts team have begun a project to scan all the Light Blue and Sports Reviews the group have from the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties. Please see below an example of what has been done so far. We have almost reached the seventies. All of the scanning so far has been done by James Taylor. We are immensely grateful for the work he has done so far. When the project is completed the papers will be donated to a local museum for safe archiving and storage. We have already been in discussion concerning this. We will be uploading the completed copies downloaded onto this site shortly. We hope you will enjoy the memories and are able relive former times Check out more concerning the 100yearsofcoconuts project by clicking here ![]()

The dryers will be of benefit to both club staff and fans in improving hygiene standards.
It was hoped at the time they would also be of benefit in the fight against the spread of the corona virus.
The first one was fitted on the Friday before the Cheltenham game just as news of matches being called off was annouced. Glen Gawthrop carried out the work us and fitted the remainder last week.
These were done at no cost to the football club and more will be installed in the future, if and when funds become available.
To raise the funds needed for improvements the CUFCLottery require supporters to participate in the lottery
I have two unsung heroes this week that have been working to ensure that parts of the stadium certification are in place and ready for the local authority to sign off.
Dave Mills of Cambridge Gas Services has been servicing and certificating all the gas boilers within the stadium and carrying out other repairs along the way. |
We have also been very busy improving the hand washing facilities within the stadium with increased soap dispensers and dryers being installed that have all been paid for by the Cambridge United Lottery and again we thank everybody within the lottery committee for authorising the work.

Stadium Manager / Head Groundsman
The CFU outlet is being moved back at some point in the future back to the front of the ground.
There is new signage on the end ot the shop. Les took the old signs off early in the month
We are also planning a new sign to inform everyone where the ground is and also match day information. It wont be same as the one that previously was in sitiu but it will be on view from the road
And finally on the Supporters Club area the trees were cut back

“These are unprecedented times for all of us in so many different ways. Events continue to move quickly and the picture is changing constantly.
One of the most concerning features of this situation for everyone is that there is no clarity as to when it will end. We need to manage this on the basis that we have no football, or other commercial activity, until some point in the summer and quite possibly, sometime after that.
Confirmation of Club staff working from home
In accordance with government advice this week, our stadium based staff have been working from home where possible, with the Abbey Stadium now effectively on lockdown, as the Football Club looks to ensure we do all we can to reduce the spread of the virus. Our first team players and staff remain in self-isolation, as was communicated earlier this week. Primarily, the health and safety of people is the most important thing at a time like this, and we encourage our supporters to follow government advice and avoid non-essential social contact.
The finances
Last week the Club stated that the current situation would lead to "significant financial implications", and over the past days we have been able to calculate the effects the loss of revenue will have on our cash flow for the coming period. It is going to be extremely challenging to manage this but we believe we can do it.
We are in regular contact with the EFL and Football League clubs, most of which face similar financial challenges. The EFL have listened to the clubs’ concerns and yesterday they announced there is to be a £50 million relief fund. This is welcome news but the amount we can access is relatively small and it is far from a complete answer to the financial problem we are facing.
We are looking at ways of reducing our cost base and this will include making some extremely difficult decisions when it comes to our staff. We have had some really helpful offers of support, including a deferment of our rent for a period by our landlords, Grosvenor.
Inevitably we will most certainly need the support of our fan base to help us financially. One option we are considering is putting season tickets for the 20/21 season on sale earlier than in previous years. In that scenario, we really would require your unwavering support where possible whilst understanding this is a challenging time for everyone.
Community
We have been working hard this week to look at how the Club and Trust can help the wider community and support those most in need over the coming weeks and months in different ways. A number of activities are now under way and you can follow this on social media – do share this with others so we can access as many people who we may be able to help as possible. We are and remain United for Cambridge.
We will provide further updates as our plans progress.”
Mick starts the aeration program to help relieve surface compaction and improve root development Goal mouths are raked out to remove and loose divots ready for the start of a renovation next week. Pitch perimeter is weed killed to remove the meadow grass that has self germinated from the surrounding areas as this is can contaminate the playing surface and quickly become the dominant species. meadow grass (Poa) removal is one of the reasons the top surface of a playing surface is removed annually. We have taken on board all the government advice relating to the coronavirus outbreak and are working inside the stadium on limited staffing levels who work under strict virus caution instruction and control and there are things we can do to be proactive for when football returns to the Abbey.
This unforeseen situation has meant that we have had to bring as much work forward as possible as you will be aware we normally get 10-12 weeks to undertake all the pitch renovation work and stadium inspections and maintenance, We have been very fortunate that a number of our suppliers and friends of the football club have been generous and donated materials to me that enables us to get essential work done.
We have had a problem at the North west end of the pitch this season in that all the constant heavy rain has took its toll on the playing surface, We had made the decision to install a new main drain to harvest the water from the lateral drains, This work was due to have been carried out in the first week of May but it is now unlikely that we will get the normal close season break of 10-12 weeks so with that in mind the decision was made to install the drain immediately during this forced break .
All work carried out at no cost to the club for materials
The drain had to be dug out by hand to ensure that we did not hit any of the irrigation pipes, cables and pre-existing drainage.
The drainage system on the playing surface is essential as the sub-soil is solid clay and creates a barrier preventing water movement, the other negative to this sub-soil is the reduces the life of the porous drains, our excavation showed the new drains installed just four years ago are already showing signs of reduced flow due to contamination of fine particles of the clay sub-soil that have washed in to the pipework. The new drain was essential as this area is used for the home team warm up and receives intensive footwork and wear |
The playing surface re-instated after several days hard work installing the new pipework and will hopefully be fully repaired in time for the re-commencement of the football.
I have to say a special thanks to Mick Brown and the stadium volunteers who have continued to work hard and assist around the stadium during these difficult times in order to ensure the stadium will be ready for use once things get going again. If any other companies or suppliers feel that they can help with any donations of materials like paint, paint brushes, timber, screws etc please get in contact with me. During the past couple of years Cambridge United football club have become a MENTAL HEALTH aware football club.
The football club carry out extensive work in the community and with the club staff which was recently recognised and received an award
'MIND YOUR HEAD' MENTAL HEALTH INITIATIVE LEAGUE TWO COMMUNITY PROJECT OF THE YEAR
So when the football club EFL mental health day was confirmed we took the opportunity to get as much publicity and awareness for mental health as possible.
Working alongside MIND the football club were given permission to create black and amber signs to highlight mental health awareness around the stadium
But what we could do was THIS
I had to fight depression for four years, sometimes working long days and nights and then next day having to pretend that nothing was wrong.
I don’t think people who have never suffered with depression can have any idea what it is like or understand that depression is constant. Some days it is not as bad as others but on a bad day it knocks you down before you can even get out of bed.
I have now thankfully recovered after one of the most challenging journeys in my life
SO WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP YOURSELF AND OTHERS
Look at it from a different angle???
What do you do if your car breaks down, Take it to a garage and get a mechanic to carry out a repair
What do you do if your electric goes off at home ??? call out an electrician and carry out the repair
So why when you are feeling low in yourself do you not ask for help, talk to a family member or friend , life is the most precious thing we all receive yet we don’t deal with the signs of a breakdown .
I was fortunate to have a number of friends come to my aid once I had been diagnosed and several had been through mental health issues themselves and they were the last people on earth that I would have imagined to suffer.
It is very hard to tell if a person is depressed unless they breakdown in front of you or find a way to tell you. Depression is not like a broken leg you don’t have a plaster cast on so people can see your injury.
If you know somebody who is going through a difficult time or have a slightest doubt about somebody who may be struggling REACH OUT. Even if you don’t think it will help. DO IT even if it makes you feel uncomfortable. Just ask are you okay? And then ask again are you really okay?
Let me tell you it is easy to dismiss the first are you okay but the second are you okay gives the person the opportunity to talk.
It is very important at this point in time with the world at war with Coronavirus to take care of our own mental health and personal health.
Manage your self-care and offer support to others that may be struggling in silence.

This action, which will be kept under constant review, has been taken due to the increasing numbers of Clubs taking steps to isolate their players and staff because of the COVID-19 virus.
The postponements include all matches in the Championship, League One and League Two, as well as all Academy and youth team fixtures.
In addition, Clubs are being advised to suspend indefinitely all non-essential activities which include, but are not limited to, player appearances, training ground visits and fan meetings.
Whilst the EFL Board has continued to take the advice and guidance offered by the Government and its health advisors, emerging developments mean now is the time to implement football’s contingency plans in response to the crisis.
A further update on these plans will be given post an EFL Board Meeting next week.
This decision has not been taken lightly, but the EFL must prioritise the health and well-being of players, staff and supporters while also acknowledging the Government’s national efforts in tackling this outbreak.

When I came away from the cafe it made me realise how little we may know about the people we stand next to on the terraces or sit by in the stands. We see people every game and recognise them however we rarely get to know them very well. An ingredient of the match day experience is about terrace banter and social interaction. There are cases when sometimes without intention it can go too far and may cause someone upset. Please before making a comment that is meant as humour consider if the person you are sitting next to has dementia. It could one day have a real baring on your life with someone close to or even yourself being affected. The person with dementia may not remember what you have said but the family member or friend with them will do so for a long time. I am sure no one would want that on their conscience.
When each day starts at the Abbey the days tasks are planned out, however, sometimes as the day goes by events overtake what is planned. This morning we planned to empty the gully pots around the ground. A simple task taking no more than an hour to do and one done quarterly to help with the drainage of the pitch and around the ground. Today, was different when we found out the drainage pipes in the Habbin Stand had become blocked and needed clearing. The pipes were clogged up with sand, soil and lots of debris. The network of pipes around the ground are a constant source of problems. We have eliminated much of the sewage problems during the past few years with the removal of paper towels however during the Carlisle match there were problems during the game that needed clearing urgently. This was not possible, but highlighted the problems that exist daily. They were done on the Monday morning by a specialist company Did you know that at 7.30am on the morning of the Carlisle match the pitch was waterlooged in some areas and that it needed forking by volunteers, Mick and Ian for most ot the morning following heavy rain We were also able to help rescue the frog and return it to the stream behind the Abbey | See below the videos of the work being done Next time you go along the back of the Abbey see if you can spot where the pipes leave the ground |

You can also use the customer booking App which is probably now the best way to book and has safety features that might appeal to female/lone female passengers regardless of the sex of the driver sent - these include push notifications/texts with vehicle and licence details as the driver is dispatched and arrives and also the ability to track the driver en-route and to call them (or vice-versa) without the customers (or drivers) phone number being exposed (called masked calling) - these features seem to really appeal to female passengers and App bookings now make up over 45% of all the bookings we take.
There is a similar feature available as a personal customer web-booker from Panther Taxi's. Also, they have all the drivers details and movements recorded (via GPS tracking) and all phone calls recorded too - including any from the driver to the customer.
The app can be downloaded here www.panthertaxis.co.uk/mobile-booking-apps
