Following this week’s news concerning the agreement in principle with Grosvenor for the Club to buy back the freehold of the Abbey Stadium, Cambridge Fans United would like to make the following statement:
We would like to thank Grosvenor for allowing this opportunity and to thank them for their continued support during some of the really dark days in the club’s history. Without their support the club may not have achieved its current success and be in the position we find ourselves today. We would like to thank Paul Barry, Mark Green and Adam Webb for their superb support during the past two years and especially throughout the period of Covid. We would also like to thank them as custodians for enabling this opportunity to take place. There must have also been a lot of work going on in the background by many others on the Board and elsewhere. We must not forget their part and we really do appreciate it. CFU Chair Andy Stephen said, “Every supporter’s heart was broken when the ground was originally sold. Today, those hearts have been repaired. I still cannot personally believe we are in this position or even talking about it. I never thought this day would happen in my lifetime. Supporters cannot express their gratitude to everyone personally. However, we are happy to do so on their behalf.” The Fans Led Review which took place last year has also promoted the protection which will ensure the freehold is secured for future generations of Cambridge United supporters with the Golden Share. This mechanism will, if future owners wanted to sell the Abbey and relocate the Club, allow those holding the Golden Share to veto the decision unless it is agreed to be the right thing for the Club. Andy continued, “The club’s motto is United in Endeavour. The Abbey Stadium’s return is the opportunity for everyone to come together and be united in building a brighter future which we can be proud of.” |
