Football's silent shame: Dementia 'conspiracy' is a stain on the game from the Telegraph
Football today stands accused of behaving like the notorious tobacco industry of the 1960s and has been warned that its “scandalous” failure to carry out research into the link between dementia and the world’s most popular sport risks legal action running into hundreds of millions of pounds. On Tuesday, The Telegraph launches a campaign to demand action on brain injuries potentially caused by football with the backing of those deeply affected plus medical experts. The issue has been brought into sharp focus in this 50th anniversary year of the 1966 World Cup triumph, with four of the eight surviving outfield players of England’s greatest team now confirmed to be suffering with significant memory problems. Kick It Out, football’s equality and inclusion organisation, is calling on football supporters to #KlickItOut as the organisation launches a campaign to raise awareness of football-related social media discrimination and how to report such incidents.
The ‘Klick It Out’ campaign is encouraging football supporters to kick social media abuse out of football and promote equality and inclusion. Supporters can include the #KlickItOut hashtag when talking about the campaign and can also show their backing by sharing their ‘we need #KlickItOut’ message on social media. Since 2014, Kick It Out has spoken about the issue of online discrimination. The challenge for Kick It Out was, and still is, that incidents occurring on social media do not fall under any football regulation, unless it can be proved that the individual involved is a participant under English football jurisdiction. The Difficulties with Academies & the EPPP from The Whitehouse Address
Why Brentford’s decision is worrying for the future of many academies, but an understandable choice for many Football League clubs To have decided to close their Academy weeks after sorting out their groups and signing new players for next season seemed very heartless and thoughtless. Perhaps the decision had been made months ago and it was merely a case of letting the season come to an end, acting like business as usual and then hitting the sucker-punch at the end. A pretty devastating one for all the young players within Brentford’s Academy programme who dreams must have felt tarnished in the 90 minute meeting which was held to announce the immediate closure of the Academy. Why had this decision being made, so drastically too, and what does it say about the state of Academies outside the Premier League? It was an economical and perhaps one could argue analytical decision (this is of course the route Brentford have taken under owner Matthew Benham and the newly appointed co-director's of football Rasmus Ankersen and Phil Giles. Up till now it hasn’t precisely corresponded to success on the pitch, the club seemed in a much better position under the management of Mark Warburton, but this is the route they have chosen to take. The decision to close the Academy was based on simple economics. As the statement from the club read “The club must strive to find ways to do things differently to our rivals, in order to compete and progress as a Championship football club. We cannot outspend the vast majority of our competitors therefore we will never shy away from taking the kind of decision that can give us a competitive edge." At a cost of £1.5m a year to be a Category 2 Academy the club felt this was too much expenditure for the ‘hope’ of ‘producing’ a player for the 1st team, or more importantly it seems these days, a player who can be sold for upwards of £5m to a Premier League club. Football Fans Not Criminals highlights the ways in which ordinary law-abiding football fans are being treated like criminals.
For merely attending a match and supporting their team, fans are subject to a series of special controls and restrictions which do not apply to supporters of other sports. Our Manifesto calls for a series of changes, from the abolition of civil banning orders to the ending of alcohol restrictions while travelling to matches. Football Fans Not Criminals will be launched at an evening discussion on 2 June, in central London. Come along to discuss the over-regulation of football fans and what we can do about it. Here we go again, then. No sooner had the Football League season come to an end – and with play-offs still to be played for the end of this season, we might well argue that the body isn’t merely warm but is actually still practicing recital of its famous last words – than that the League’s proposals for shaking up its entire structure were released into the public domain. There doesn’t seem to be any area of football that so clearly demonstrates the fundamental line between those who administer the game and those who consume it than these proposals. They only ever seem to demonstrate a game that has little to no interest in the interests of supporters, only in those who are already handsomely rewarded for their involvement in it.
The headline figures are that the Football League proposes to change from three divisions of twenty-four clubs to being four divisions of twenty, and that the League Cup and the Football League Trophy will be retained in some form or another. The proposals already have the “in principle” support of the both the Premier League and the Football Association, so there’s no need for the Football League to worry about what obstacles they may come across there. Supporters, on the other hand, seem fairly low on their list of priorities, as can be seen from their list of objectives from the entire exercise, which are listed as: – To maximise the number of weekend/Bank Holiday league fixtures; – To remove where practical fixture congestion and scheduling conflicts; – To protect/improve financial distributions/income generation for Football League clubs; – To maintain the Football League Play-Off Finals as the last event of the domestic season. Keep calm and muddle through
Abbey United carried on throughout the Second World War, as Andrew Bennett's comprehensive record shows. While Abbey United were losing at Histon on May Day 1939, Adolf Hitler was making a speech in which he claimed: ‘I am a lover of peace.’ Britain declared war on Germany on 3 September 1939, and the Government decreed: ‘Sports gatherings and all gatherings for purposes of entertainment and amusement, whether outdoor or indoor which involve large numbers congregating together, are prohibited until further notice.’ That stance soon softened, and an ad hoc series of leagues and cups developed, regionalised due to petrol rationing. The turnover of players was rapid as men joined up and moved around with their units, and many famous names appeared as guests for clubs and services teams: Dixie Dean and Alex James were just two of the stars who appeared on Abbey United’s humble turf during the war years. Sports clubs come in many shapes and sizes. Some are multimillion pound businesses playing from state of the art stadia; others operate from reclaimed shipping containers and rely on a weekly raffle to get by. Whatever sport, and at whatever level, a sports club has an almost unique ability to bring together the community. They can provide an unrivalled sense of pride, identity and sense of place for a geographic community. IN BRITAIN, the idea of a merger between football clubs fills many supporters with dread. The emotional attachment that forms between a club and its fans means that change is seen as a threat, a break from the norm and the severance of tradition. We’re all a little bit NIMBY (not in my backyard), but when it comes to football, common sense goes out of the window and status quo and comfort blankets are the norm. Club colours, stadiums, names, nicknames, badges, away kits – any suggestion that these should change is greeted with horror.

Tickle Sanderson: Memories of pre-war Cambridge & the club that became Cambridge United
He was born in Chesterton in 1920, and he's believed to be the oldest living Abbey United player. Herbert Sanderson has been known as Tickle since his childhood – listen to the first part of his Radio Coconuts interview, recorded in April 2016, to find out why. The speedy outside right first played for Abbey United in 1938, and he went on to make 69 appearances, scoring 23 goals, as war affected football as much as it did every other aspect of life in Britain. This is the third season that the Away Fans Feedback Project, run by the Football Supporters' Federation, will measure the experience of the away fan. We will assemble the thoughts and experiences of fans in the Premier League, Championship, League One, League Two, Conference, Conference North/South and League of Wales throughout the season.
We hope that you will return to complete this survey for future matches, and appreciate any help in spreading the word about this project. The more of you that can share this survey on messageboards, Facebook and Twitter the better. All the answers to the following questions regarding your matchday experience should be with reference to a specific match that you have attended in the 2015/16 season, identified in Question 5, unless stated. The ultimate aim is to improve the away fans' experience and encourage more fans to travel to watch their team. From this project we will discuss with clubs and the authorities, in an academic fashion, what keeps fans committed to travelling and to the sacrifices they make, what they look for as a travelling fan, their likes, dislikes, and why they feel valued or otherwise. The survey should take no more than a couple of minutes to complete. All answers are given anonymously, and no personal or identifying data will be passed on to third parties. Ever. SD Statement regarding Football League proposals
In response to recent proposals made by the Football League regarding potential changes to the league structure, Supporters Direct have begun a consultation with our members, which includes 66 current Football League Supporters Trusts and 5 Supporter-Owned Football League clubs. - See more at: http://www.supporters-direct.org/news-article/sd-statement-regarding-football-league-restructure-proposals#sthash.Aghog15j.dpuf Football League proposes radical restructure of divisions The Football League Board has put forward a number of sweeping changes to the structure of its own competitions and the most significant proposal involves increasing the number of clubs in the Football League to 80 across four divisions. Seventy-two clubs currently compete across three divisions - the Championship, League One, and League Two - the additional teams required would likely be drawn from the National League although the proposals don’t set this in stone. - See more at: http://fsf.org.uk/latest-news/view/football-league-board-proposes-radical-restructure-of-divisions#sthash.lCOplWOA.dpuf Click on the image to below to find out more about the Supporters Summit

Malcolm Watt is 47. He is a former Scottish number one tennis player, who once beat Pat Cash. In the past five years, he has lost most of his ability to communicate and can no longer look after himself. But he still plays tennis like a pro. George is maybe 40 years older than Malcolm - he can't remember precisely. He used to be a motor mechanic. He thinks he has grandchildren, although he can't say for sure. He struggles to remember his wife's name. Mention the Lisbon Lions though, and he sparks into life. Both men have dementia, an incurable disease. But both are being helped by the power of sport. On a glorious sunlit day in the elegant surroundings of Kelvinside in Glasgow, Watt is hitting balls with his old friend Ian Campbell, the head tennis coach at Western Health and Racquets Club. The Football League has distributed a discussion document to its member clubs ahead of its summer conference and AGM next monthClubs are being asked to consider the re-organisation of the domestic league system into five divisions of 20 teams from the 2019/20 season.
Under the proposal, The Football League would become a four division competition below the Premier League, including a new League Three, with 100 clubs competing across the professional game. In addition, the League Cup and League Trophy will be retained with the latter potentially having a revised format include a group structure of three games before becoming a knockout competition thereafter. At this point, the Board of The Football League is offering no recommendation other than asking clubs to give the matter their full consideration, taking into account the following: - Football League Clubs should be in a financially no worse, or preferably better, position as a result of any changes; - Promotion to/relegation from the Premier League must be retained at three places; - There would be no relegation out of The Football League in season 2018/19; - Football League Clubs must support the final proposal. The proposal stems from English football’s collective concerns about the fixture calendar and enjoys the 'in principle' support of executives from the Premier League and FA. The Premier League is due to take a report to their Clubs at their summer meeting, while the FA Executive needs to consult with its Board. The congested fixture list remains one of the game’s biggest concerns with insufficient dates available in each season to sensibly accommodate both League and Cup fixtures without significant clashes. The League’s proposal seeks to achieve a new, innovative approach to the fixture calendar and will need ‘whole game’ support as this concern is not unique to The Football League and is shared for differing reasons by both the Premier League and FA. If implemented , the proposal would The number of midweek matches reduce from next season’s nine in the Championship, seven in League One and six in League Two to just one in the Championship, League Two and the new League Three and none in League One in 2019/20. In considering these matters, the football authorities have identified the following objectives: Read more at http://www.football-league.co.uk/news/article/2016/a-whole-game-solution-3119809.aspx#v2h3rW3LJhbbhPG8.99
A FEW years back, Stockport County received a delegation of Chinese businessmen interested in investing in English football. This unlikely alliance resulted in a club in China being named after the “the hatters”, Stockport Tiger Star, based in Shanyang.
It was a taste of things to come as China is now buying into English and European football in a big way. The recent transfer market activity involving Chinese clubs was firm evidence that there is something of a paradigm shift going on in the game. The figures we are talking about are huge, the calibre of player being snapped up by the likes of Guangzhou Evergrande and other Chinese Super League clubs high. The only Brit playing his trade in China actually has non-league roots – Jack Sealy, the son of ex-QPR forward Tony, who played for Bristol Manor Farm, among other clubs. https://gameofthepeople.com/2016/05/15/eastern-promise-could-chinas-appetite-include-non-league/ Contact CFU | Join CFU | News | Join CUFC Lottery (It costs just 20 pounds to join CFU and your membership makes a difference) CFU. BY PAUL SAVAGE from Football Pink
It’s September 1st 2001 and Michael Owen and Emile Heskey have just put Germany to the sword, thrashing them 5-1 in their own backyard. It was part of that euphoric time before the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea when the ‘golden generation’ were meant to bring home the trophy. Hopes were high with Rio, Frank and David Beckham in the prime of their careers. It was also a golden time for Grimsby Town. Just as England had kicked off that game at the Olympiastadion in Munich, the Mariners sat proudly at the top of the Championship (then known as Division One) thanks to a 1-0 win over Barnsley. Phil Jevons – signed the previous summer from Everton for £250,000 – had scored his first league goal in a black and white shirt to fire the Mariners to the league’s summit.
