It was great to see the First team win against Ipswich yesterday and I am very pleased for Mark Bonner and the everybody involved on the football side of things but I feel that I have to pay special thanks to the small group of volunteers who have helped out over the past few weeks.
We have all had to change the way we think and work on a daily basis due to the Covid situation and this close season has certainly been one of my most challenging and very lonely at times. Mick Brown and I found ourselves alone in the stadium with Stephen Buck the head accountant at the club for weeks upon end during the lock-down knowing that we still had to fulfill all the requirements of the safety certificate and keep the stadium running ready for the return of staff. Once the government started to slightly ease the lock-down we started to have a small number of the volunteers back at the stadium to help out whilst ensuring the numbers were very limited and they had to complete a full risk assessment and comply with an awful lot of restrictions whilst being at the stadium. The small group who attended were simply outstanding and the professionalism and quality of work was top class . Due to the Covid situation we could not invite all the volunteers back in to the stadium as we had to ensure social distancing was in place at all times. The group who came together to assist at the ground are now entering their third year at the stadium and I have to say that the stadium looks in very good condition due to all the expertise of the group. The thanks however do not stop there the Cambridge United Lottery as previously mentioned came to our aid when we found ourselves without a tractor due to the lease expiring the lottery purchased our old tractor back from E.Doe which enabled us to continue with our pitch work. The lottery also assisted with the pitch renovation this close season by purchasing 10 bags of grass seed . I will not name them at this point but have to say a huge thanks to so many individuals and companies who have simply donated thousands of pounds of materials or equipment and also worked in the stadium free of charge to help us get through the Covid period. I thank everybody who has helped and supported the club during these challenging times . Ian Darler Stadium Manager Cambridge United FC

It is with immense sadness that Cambridge United Football Club confirm the passing of lifelong supporter and volunteer Carol Looker, who passed quietly at her home yesterday evening.
Carol was a close friend for many Cambridge United supporters, and for most U’s fans was the recognisable, wonderfully kind, friendly face on the away travel coach, seller of 50/50 tickets on match day at the Abbey and for a period in the Club shop. Cambridge United Fans Elected Director Dave Matthew-Jones has penned an obituary on behalf of the Football Club, to pay tribute to a wonderful lady: Walking past the Cut Throat Lane turnstiles on match day or travelling on the away travel coach will now never be the same again. No longer seeing Carol selling raffle or 50/50 tickets, will mean that a part of the match day experience will now be missing for many Cambridge United fans. She was a master of selling a ticket. A true expert. However hard you tried to avoid buying one, she would always catch you out with the knowing kind smile of a master at work. It is fifty years since her love affair with Cambridge United United began, when she attended her first match at the Abbey Stadium. I first knew Carol when she ran the Away Travel Race Nights. They were organised so that a collective group could afford to sponsor a player and support the Club. Over the years she completed so many tasks at the Club too. When the Club was on its knees, she was there to help out in the club shop/ ticket office. She would always do whatever was needed to help support the Club and players she loved. How many supporters below the age of 35 have organised their away match travels arrangement through Carol? How many younger ones were looked after by her? Without Carol they would not have been able to travel on their own to matches. The players she sponsored and those she supported from the terrace all loved her and she never let them down with her loyal support. Never criticising anyone who wore the Black and Amber of Cambridge United. Football Clubs need supporters like Carol. Individuals who give everything to their club. Never questioning and only supporting. I am sure Carol will be waiting for the arrival of all and every Cambridge United supporter at the gates of heaven, to offer us a friendly welcome and to ask if we want "one ticket for 50 pence or three for a pound." An extremely sad day for her family and everyone at Cambridge United Football Club. Thank you Carol. Rest in Peace. Everybody at Cambridge United Football Club would like to pass on our deepest condolences to Carol’s closest friends and family, during this incredibly sad time. Fan groups, politicians and pundits call for urgent action to protect the “very existence” of clubs21/8/2020
upporters’ groups from across the country have joined forces with politicians and pundits to launch “Sustain The Game!” – a new campaign which calls for urgent action from the authorities to protect the existence of clubs throughout the game.
The financial strains caused by Covid-19 have threatened many clubs and fans say urgent action is needed from the football authorities to help them survive. The Football Supporters’ Association (FSA) is coordinating Sustain The Game! and says that while the current pandemic has brought many issues to an immediate head, these are long standing finance and governance matters which need to be fixed. The Government’s 2019 manifesto committed to a “fan led” review of football governance and the FSA says it wants to demonstrate the support within football for that to happen. The campaign is backed by fans’ organisations from almost all of the 92 Premier League and EFL clubs alongside those in the women’s game, non-league and high profile ex-pros and pundits such as Jamie Carragher, Henry Winter, Colin Murray, Amy Lawrence, Guy Mowbray, and FSA Commentator of the Year Peter Drury. Political support comes in the shape of ex-sports minister Tracey Crouch, Labour’s shadow sports minister Alison McGovern and Liberal Democrats’ Daisy Cooper MP, the party’s sports spokesperson. The campaign is also backed by the cross-party All-Party Parliamentary Group for Football Supporters and many community-owned clubs including the newly-formed Bury AFC. Campaign backers say the football authorities and government cannot sit back and watch as dozens of historic clubs are under immediate threat and could disappear altogether. FSA chief executive Kevin Miles said: “Football occupies a special space in our society as clubs carry huge cultural and local economic importance. Sustain The Game! will demonstrate the need for urgent action as the very existence of many clubs is under threat. If we don’t act now we might lose some forever. “We call on everyone with an interest in the game, from clubs and leagues to players and managers, to come together and work in partnership to support Sustain The Game! The time for action isn’t next week, next month, or next year – it’s now.” Ex-Liverpool and England defender Jamie Carragher said: “The FSA’s Sustain The Game! campaign can play a massive role in protecting clubs throughout the game. This is a difficult time for the game but it’s also a chance to make real changes. Supporters’ have to be involved in that as well.” Sustain The Game! is built around five key principles and aims to protect clubs, increase transparency, implement strong independent financial controls, strengthen the football pyramid, and increase supporter engagement.
