UpdateFrom Monday July 11 to Monday October 10 2016, we are seeking people’s views on a planned package of measures to tackle peak-time congestion in Cambridge which will significantly improve public transport, cycling and walking journeys.
Your feedback will be used by the Greater Cambridge City Deal to help shape and improve the approach, which was approved in principle by the Executive Board in June. Final recommendations are due to be considered in January 2017. Have your say We would like to know what you think about the plan, how you think this might affect you or motivate you to change your mode of transport when travelling in Cambridge. While the combination of measures has been agreed, we are keen to hear any issues or concerns you may have about any particular elements. This is a preliminary period of engagement and further consultation on specific elements of the package is planned in due course. You can have your say in a number of different ways:

New ICM research for Stonewall into homophobic, biphobic and transphobic attitudes and experiences among sports fans shows that abuse is still regularly heard at live sporting events.
Football fans are the most likely to hear homophobic abuse, with 72 per cent of fans hearing it while watching live sports in the past five years. The research also reveals that 18- to 24-year-olds are twice as likely to say they would be embarrassed if their favourite player came out as gay (22 per cent), compared to 12 per cent overall. This age group is also twice as likely to agree that anti-LGBT language is harmless if it’s just meant as banter, (22 per cent compared to 13 per cent overall). However, despite this, the research highlights some encouraging trends. Across the general population, 9 in 10 (88 per cent) would be either ‘proud’ or ‘neutral’ if their favourite player came out as gay (50 per cent proud, 38 per cent neutral). The research also shows that the majority of people think that offensive language towards LGBT people in sport is a problem (59 per cent), with young people more likely to identify it as a ‘big problem’ (28 per cent compared to 13 per cent overall). Exclusive: Premier League clubs accused of betraying disabled fans with a third failing to meet wheelchair access promise BY Jerem y Wilson, Deputy Football Correspondent, The Telegraph
Premier League clubs have been accused of “disgracefully” betraying their disabled fans after it was revealed that almost a third are expected to renege on a collective promise to provide the minimum recommended access for wheelchairs. Despite being secured a windfall from television deals over the next three years of £8.3 billion, some of the richest clubs in world football – including Chelsea and Liverpool – appear already to have accepted that they will not meet a pledge that was made last year. Phased redevelopment - Abbey Stadium Newmarket Road Cambridge Cambridge Fans United (CFU) is the trust which represents supporters of Cambridge United Football Club (CUFC). As such, it wishes to comment on the proposal to redevelop the Abbey Stadium and, in particular, to support the proposal wholeheartedly. The Abbey Stadium, which is currently referred to as the Cambs Glass Stadium, provides the facilities for the football club to operate, both to play matches as a League Two club and to administer a very large range of sporting and community related projects. These are set out in detail, in the planning application, which explains their extent, relevance and the benefits which the community enjoys, as a consequence. The stadium itself has suffered from deterioration over many years, due to the inability of the football club to fund sufficient maintenance to prevent it. Modern facilities are urgently needed, both to sustain football at the stadium, by meeting safety and comfort standards for spectators and in order to sustain and grow the other activities which the club is committed to. Transforming both the facilities and the governance of the ground, by the creation of a redeveloped Community Stadium would provide the club and the local community, which currently lacks good provision for sport and other community facilities, with a regeneration worthy of Cambridge. Again, this is set out in the Community Benefits Statement, within the application. Without the investment which this proposal entails, taken together with and funded by development of a Sporting Village and additional housing at Trumpington, which is the subject of a separate, but linked application, the Abbey Stadium site will, in all probability, continue to decline, even to the extent that it could become unviable. This proposal offers the prospect of a very real and significant improvement in the availability of sports and community facilities in Abbey ward, which will also benefit Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire residents for many years to come. CFU sees this proposal as an exciting opportunity for the area to acquire a set of sporting and community facilities which are unrivalled locally, and which would provide something special for many years to come and it urges Members to support the proposal. Land at M11, west of Hauxton Road, Trumpington Cambridge Fans United (CFU) is the trust which represents supporters of Cambridge United Football Club (CUFC). As such, it wishes to comment on the proposal to create a Sporting Village on land adjacent to the M11 in Trumpington and, in particular, to support the proposal wholeheartedly. The rapid expansion of Cambridge and the surrounding areas of Cambridgeshire has brought, and will continue to bring, a significant number of additional residential developments with many new houses and flats either recently completed or set to be occupied over the next few years. Whilst some amenities have been and are being provided in association with most of these, there is a notable absence of the sort of sporting opportunities which are being proposed in this application. The range of sports which would be available to the public, if consent is granted to the scheme, is wide and, as we see it, flexible, as elements of the sporting village are adaptable and capable of hosting a wide variety of sporting uses. This would make the Trumpington Sporting Village a fantastic resource for almost all ages and it could act as a real trigger for people from all walks of life to become fit and maintain their fitness, which is an important requirement in the modern age. Good sports provision in South Cambridgeshire is, currently, in very short supply and frequently has limits on access to more than a limited audience. This proposal addresses that in a really effective way and offers the potential for something rather special and unique, which should not be underestimated in its potential to assist in promoting health and wellbeing in the area. As supporters of CUFC, CFU also has the future interests and welfare of the football club very much in mind. Cambridge United is the premier football club in the Cambridge area, with attendances at matches rising and attracting a wide range of support including, particularly, an increasing percentage of families. It also undertakes a surprisingly large range of work with youngsters in the community, through sporting activities and its work with schools and also underprivileged young people. This is achieved, very often, with minimal resources and supporting facilities. The creation of a sporting village at Trumpington would help to transform the ability of the football club to deliver really good quality courses, training and life skills, which will benefit many communities, locally. These great and much needed sporting facilities will be provided at no cost to the public purse, and funded by the construction of additional housing, adjacent to the recently developed area of Trumpington Meadows. This, in itself, will assist in avoiding the need to provide new housing sites in other South Cambs villages and assist the district council in achieving its government-set targets for accommodation. It is understood that the proposed development sits within the green belt, and there will be a reluctance to allow development unless it can be shown that the proposals are appropriate and suitable for the location. This site does appear to be the right place for the proposed development, as it adjoins existing housing and there is the potential for the necessary infrastructure to be provided, with relatively minimal disruption. The land owner, Grosvenor, has a record of delivering high quality developments and not shrinking away from providing the full quota of 40% of affordable housing, unlike some others. The present quality of the green belt in this location is not the best, and it does not present a particularly striking picture as one approaches it from the south. This view, it can be argued, may improve with the creation of the sporting village and the development of the country park alongside it, especially where it abuts the M11. The M11, itself, provides a significant transport link which, taken together with the close proximity of the Trumpington Park & Ride site and the Guided Busway, addresses the question of traffic and parking, which is always a potentially difficult issue for new developments. CFU supports proposals within the city of Cambridge for a transformation of the existing Cambridge United FC ground in the Abbey Ward into a Community Stadium for the benefit not only of the football club but also parts of Cambridge which are underprovided with sporting and other community facilities. The potential success of that project relies, substantially, on the granting of consent for this proposal. Whilst realising that this proposal itself must be considered on its own merits, CFU believes that the two schemes taken together, do represent significant and, really, once in a lifetime opportunities for Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire which may not arise again. The alternative may well be a decline in the club’s ability to deliver on its programmes and, even threaten its future, altogether, with the knock on effect on the health and fitness of Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire people. CFU sees this proposal as an exciting opportunity for the area to acquire a set of sporting facilities which are unrivalled locally, and which would provide something special for many years to come and it urges Members to support the proposal. Football supporters act as the cornerstone for the professional and non-league game in England. Fans of all clubs, regardless of age, disability, gender, race, faith, sexual orientation or any other identifying feature, should feel safe and welcome attending matches.Kick It Out and the Football Supporters’ Federation (FSF) jointly launched the ‘Fans For Diversity’ campaign in March 2014, supported by the Premier League’s fans fund, to help target a number of fan initiatives to promote diversity and inclusion across the professional and non-league game.
Anwar Uddin was appointed as the FSF’s Diversity and Campaigns Manager in March 2014. Here, he gives an overview as to the delivery of the ‘Fans for Diversity’ campaign, and how Kick It Out and the FSF are looking to further engage with supporters across all levels of the game nationwide. AT IS HAPPENING?
Two planning applications have been submitted - 1 for a Sporting Village and residential homes and the other for redevelopment of the Abbey Stadium. Both applications have been submitted by Grosvenor, the current landlords of the Abbey Stadium. HOW DOES THIS AFFECT US? The applications being approved are vital in securing the long-term future of Cambridge United and enhancing the work they do in the community. The Sporting Village will also benefit the local community with much needed sporting facilities and affordable housing. The Sporting Village will be the home for Cambridge United Youth Development and enable the Abbey Stadium to be redeveloped. The Abbey Stadium redevelopment will go towards securing the future of the club by providing non matchday revenue streams. It will also provide a platform for Cambridge United to further be a part of the community and providing sport provision for more children in the city and surrounding areas. WHY IS THERE OPPOSITION TO THE APPLICATION? The proposals are for the Sporting Village to be built on Green Belt land. There are also concerns over the increased traffic and strain on local services. HOW CAN I HELP SUPPORT THE APPLICATION? The South Cambridgeshire District Council website has an option to comment on each application. By submitting positive feedback in support of the proposals this could sway the decision in favour of the application being successful. You could also ask friends, family and other local residents to do the same. WHAT SORT OF FEEDBACK SHOULD I GIVE? You are of course free to comment your personal opinion. If you are in favour though and more specifically want to support the proposals on behalf of Cambridge United, we'd suggest you do not mention Cambridge United specifically. Instead mention the lack of sporting facilities in the area and personally how you, friends and family would potentially make use of these. You could also mention the lack of affordable housing available in the area and how this will help. We'd also suggest not directing anything towards those who are in support of rejecting the application, instead mention the positive points of approving it. WHERE CAN I SUBMIT FEEDBACK? Follow these links for the respective applications: Sporting Village - tinyurl.com/sportvillage Abbey Stadium Redevelopment - tinyurl.com/h8tpp7s Then click on "Comment on this application" (last link in the first box of text on the page).
