Dear Cambridge United Fans,
During the last few years we have discussed within the CFU committee about the completing another football kit collection for charity. This has been done in the past with a donations made to a school in Africa, organised by Joy Childs. We have made contact with an appeal from the Royal Air Force who have since 2006 collected unwanted football kits, which have been have been donated across the world. “The Appeal has been running since 2006 delivering over 172000 items of football kit to 53 countries worldwide. During 2016 the Appeal made a total of 26 deliveries across the world with the vast majority going to Kenya in preparation of the team delivery visit which took place in October and delivered over 15000 items to 53 different clubs and schools. In total 22794 items were delivered worldwide in 2016 including 6293 football shirts. Items were delivered to Kenya, Nepal, Cuba, Cameroon, Zambia, South Korea, Uganda, Belarus, Romania, Nigeria, Brazil and Mexico.” Please read more about this appeal in the link below: https://www.raf.mod.uk/rafshawbury/newsweather/index.cfm?storyid=F4044816-5056-A318-A8F356B5E576D3D9 Over the next two months (end date 31st October) we would like to collect as many unwanted football kits to donate to this great appeal. As part of the global football family we want to show that caring for others is part of the DNA of Cambridge Utd! Please hand any cleaned football kits to the CFU team in the Caravan at a match day or the club shop during the week. United in Endeavour!

Risen from the Dust – preorder now for October delivery!
In 1951, Cambridge United was a lowly United Counties League football club, although one with huge ambition. As it prepared for its first season in the Eastern Counties League, it appointed its first full-time player-manager and looked towards the stars. Supporters and players alike rolled their sleeves up and started work on the rapid rise that in 1970 took them to their promised land: the Football League. Risen from the Dust, the second volume of Andrew Bennett’s brilliant Celery & Coconuts, the definitive history of an extraordinary club, takes readers on a breathtaking surge upwards through the leagues. Created through painstaking research and told with Bennett’s eye for a story, Risen from the Dust reveals what can be achieved by a community determined to succeed. It will be published by Lovely Bunch, the publishing arm of 100 Years of Coconuts, in October 2017. Weighing in at 388 pages, Risen from the Dust is packed with illustrations and includes appendices giving all the statistical information any football could desire. With a cover price of £19.99, it will be available to CFU members at a £1 discount. The new food trailer has arrived for the NRE area today.
There is still work required in providing the services to the area
Last Friday saw the removal of the Programme Hut portacabin behind the NRE to make space for a new food outlet. See photos showing it's removal.
We were trying to remember how long it been there for. Some thought since the early nineties. Do you know if it was earlier than that? Do you remember any stories cncerning the hut? Were you ever part of the programme team working out of the hut?

United have now kept three consecutive clean sheets in the League. This is their best run since April 2016, when they won 1-0 at Newport, drew 0-0 at home to Carlisle and thrashed Morecambe 7-0 at the Abbey. Today’s attendance of 4,511 is unique in United’s history, that exact number never having been recorded before for a U’s match. It is however very close to the 4,521 who attended this fixture at Colchester on 13th August last year, and indeed the 4,518 who came to the same fixture at Layer Road on 29th December 1997. United have now risen to 12th place in the table. After five League matches last season United were bottom of the League with two points. At this juncture the two seasons before that, the U’s were 9th both times. Second-time loanee George Taft is the 21st man to be allocated the number 12 shirt at the Abbey since squad numbering was introduced in 1999. The previous incumbents were: Michael Kyd, Tom Cowan, Daniel Chillingworth, Igor Latte-Yedo, Ryan Lockett, Jon Brady, Josh Simpson, Leo Fortune-West, Jack Jeffery, Josh Coulson, Rory McAuley, Matteo Lanzoni, Jacob Blyth, Alie Sesay, Terry Kennedy, Lewis Page, Max Clark, Keith Keane, Scott Wharton and Mark Roberts. Jeffery, Blyth, Sesay, Kennedy, Page, Clark and Wharton were also loanees. Player Ratings Forde 8. Immense once again. Such a reassuring presence. Halliday 9. Far too good for this level. Legge 6. Some distinctly shaky moments in the first half, more settled in the second. Taylor 7. Looks as if he has been a centre-back all his career. Dunk 7. Reliable turn. Elito 6. Floated around fairly competently. Deegan 8. Vital fulcrum. Maris 7. Busy as ever. Brown 9. Settled in unbelievably quickly. We have a real find on our hands here. Azeez 6. Fairly anonymous. Ikpeazu 8. Still has a lot to learn, especially in decision making, but makes things happen. Ibehre 7. The team moved up a level once he came on and started linking with Ikpeazu. Mingoia 6. Decent contribution. Carroll 6. Filled in quietly. Match Summary United’s improvement – both in terms of results and quality of football – continued with a deserved win over a modest Colchester side. Greater tests await around the corner. Man of the Match Brad Halliday. A modern full-back of truly exceptional energy and quality. Ref Watch Kinseley 5. Handed out some unnecessary bookings and seemed oblivious to the existence of the advantage rule. Did you know that Cambridge United is one of a small number of League Two clubs offering a free service that brings blind and partially-sighted supporters closer to the match day action?
Around two million people in the UK have a visual impairment affecting all aspects of their everyday lives. A group of volunteers at United helps to enhance the match day experience with an audio description service enabling blind and partially-sighted supporters to attend matches at the Abbey with their friends and family and to listen to a specially-tailored commentary via a small hand-held receiver. Cambridge United is rightly proud of its work in the local community and is well known for the efforts it makes to promote diversity and equality in the way it conducts its business. Both CFU and the club itself have been vocal in the campaign against racism and in their support and fundraising initiatives for United fan Simon Dobbin. The work we do to improve the match day experience for blind and partially-sighted fans is a key part of that community action. The service the audio description team provides gives its audience a detailed description of the action. Blind and partially-sighted fans can enjoy the match day experience live at the ground by hearing a description of what they can’t see, so it’s much more detailed than a radio commentary and faster-paced. An added spatial emphasis means we focus on where the ball is and where the players are, so listeners at the game can match what they hear in the ground with a descriptive commentary, but without distractions. The service is free for users and relies on the goodwill and generosity of its volunteers and their friends to cover the maintenance and running costs of the equipment. The kit we use can be expensive to replace. Each single receiver costs over £240 to replace. Until now, maintenance expenses have amounted to little more than an annual service and a handful of new capacitors and we are fortunate that United fan and Member of Parliament for Cambridge Daniel Zeichner has become our patron and has kindly helped with replacement costs. Fewer than half of English professional clubs currently offer audio description but, as with many volunteer-based free-to-use services, new people are always needed to ensure it reaches its small but appreciative audience. We have a core of trained volunteers, with new trainees – including some young and fearless ones – regularly making the step-up to become stand-alone describers. To ensure we can keep the service going, we are always looking to train new describers as well as sighted guides. If you are interested in being involved in providing the service, or if you know someone who might like to use it, come and see us at the CFU caravan on a match day or contact our co-ordinator Nick Parker on 07929 589925 or at nick.parker56@googlemail.com to find out more. He is trying to raise money for The Eve Appeal.
It would be great if you could donate and help him reach his target and more Thank you The Eve Appeal is a charity that I knew nothing about until two years ago when my wife Faith was unexpectedly diagnosed with womb cancer. I was numbed with shock. We did our best to get through the tests, scans and appointments, hoping that every piece of information would be good rather than more bad news. On the morning of Faith's surgery, she was asked if she would consent to swabs, samples and medical details being included in a piece of research - which turned out to be funded by The Eve Appeal. More information about this particular piece of research can be found here: https://eveappeal.org.uk/our-research/our-research-programmes/forecee/ Please give generously to help fund this and other groundbreaking research to help as many women as possible in the future, and to help inform as everyone about women's cancers and how to spot them now. Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
