The following are some of the jobs completed during the past week at the Abbey. It was a good week on the pitch and a good one off it around the ground
We needed to get the ground tidied following one match and ready again in time for the two matches played during the week - the first against the Manchester United Under 15's and the second against Macclesfield. The frame being made by Jack for a lighting rig is now built and is awaiting the painting & electrics to be done. It will help to provide heat for assisting grass to grow more quickly and strongly. A new fire/smoke panel was required after the existing one became faulty and unrepairable Les has now completed painting the bottom sections of the floodlights and will move onto third next week weather permitting The area outside of the Main Stand toilets was also painted and tidied up Mick and Paul cleared all the drain pots around the ground in time for the autumn and winter weather. Ths will prevent flooding around the ground

For personal reasons the Cambridge 'Til I Die book is my favourite book about Cambridge United. I love each book for different reasons, however this one produced by Doug Shulman and Kevin Robson provided the most satisfaction and reward for me. Which is your personal favourite book about Cambridge United and why? While recently looking for a photo of its cover I found a photograph of the alternative choice -see below the two choices. If the choice was made again now, I wonder which one would now be picked. Most Premiership and Championship sides like Sheffield Wednesday (below photo) will have lights that help the grass to grow at an even rate and encourage the younger growth to grow evenly.
The club cannot afford to purchase one, so having spoken to other clubs in a similar position who have made their own. We have come up with idea of making our own. Ian drew up the plans of what he wanted and today we set about making the framework. We have named it Project Aberdeen. To find out why see below. We have been really lucky to secure the help of Giacomo, Giac for short (pronounced Jack) who is helping us now regularly. He was a maintenance man at Homerton College for many years and also worked in the building industry before retiring. During the past few weeks he has been able to deliver some of the projects we couldn't previously do. So why did we call it Project Aberdeen - well it's because Jack's son comes down from Aberdeen whenever he can to watch the mighty U's. So in recognition of that we are going to call the frame Aberdeen. By the end of the week the frame will be completed and painted. We will then need to have the electrics fitted and tested. The lights being used on the frame are secondhand and have been donated to us.

These are some of the projects we have started this week. We will update you on the ones completed during the past few weeks over the next few days -
The NRE/Corona roof was re-felted several weeks ago to make it water tight for the winter following several leaks being identified where the water was soaking through the roof. Today we finished installing the new guttering and down pipes Mick Radford is painting the metal work situated outside the toilets at the South Stand end of the Main Stand. The doors and frames were painted by Alan and Emma recently Les Weston is painting the lower sections of floodlights. He finished the NRE one at the end of the Main Stand and is now working on the Habbin / Supporters Club floodlight Alan Burge has painted the Supporters Club door that backs onto the NRE/Corona area. The windows have been repaired and painted recently Pete the Painter is going around the staircases and painting any areas that are showing signs of weather damage. This will take several weeks to complete. We also started another job which I will tell you about later in more detail

Audit of CUFC Accounts 2017/2018
At the end of June, there was announcement by the club's Director of Business, Shaun Grady, that a full audit of the 2017/2018 accounts would be carried out and that Cambridge Fans United would be involved in developing the scope and content of the audit. This followed on from the unanticipated heavy losses reported for the year 2016/2017 and extensive concerns voiced by shareholders at the club's annual meeting. CFU has been working with financial experts to identify a range of areas which were felt it would be important to to examine, in detail, as part of the audit and a comprehensive list has been shared with the club, in advance of the audit commencing. CFU representatives met with the club's Finance Director Duncan Foyle, Director of Business, Shaun Grady, and lead auditors from Price Bailey, who have been engaged to undertake the audit, earlier this week. The auditors remit is wide ranging and, whilst the audit can only report on the accounts for the year ended in June, part of that will include examination of financial process within the club, to ensure that the Board of Directors has all the relevant information it needs for the effective management of the club in the in the future. As previously reported, United directors Godric Smith and Shaun Grady invited a handful of fans and media representatives to the club to discuss how it might improve fan engagement. Nigel Pearce and Robert Osbourn represented CFU members at the meeting on 16th October.
All in all it was a very positive get together. CFU passed on the suggestions submitted by CFU members. I won’t say any more about the specifics that were discussed (at the request of the club the meeting adopted Chatham House rules so that everyone could be as open and honest as possible), but just to say Godric and Shaun were very receptive and are committed to following up on the most suitable ideas. They will report the findings to the next board meeting and then go public on what the club intends to do – to improve fan engagement. It is likely that the group will meet again in a couple of months. Thanks again to all CFU members that took the time to submit their thoughts and suggestions. Robert Osbourn

Find out more about the lottery below
What is the CUFC Play2win lottery? The lottery is run and administered by volunteer fans of Cambridge United FC as a sub group of Cambridge Fans United. The lottery is run in association with Cambridge United Football Club. Aims The lottery aims to raise funds for
How does the lottery work? Each member is issued with a four digit lottery number. Each week there are two draws held: The first is for a weekly prize – currently £300. Using a random number generator the winning four digit number is drawn. The member holding the four digit number in the same order wins the first prize. If there is no winner then runner-up prizes will be awarded to those members holding either the first two or last two digits in the correct position and order. The second draw is for the jackpot accumulator. The jackpot is again drawn using the random number generator and, as with the weekly draw, the member holding the four digit number in the same order wins the jackpot amount. If there is no winner the jackpot increases week by week by £50 until the maximum (currently £2500) is reached . How much is membership and what happens to the money? Each lottery membership costs £2.00 per week. Payment can be made by cash, cheque or bank standing order. Payments can be made monthly, quarterly, half yearly or annually. 95pence is paid into a Prize Fund. This fund can only be used for prizes – the greater the number of lottery memberships, the larger the prizes. 5pence is paid into a Cost Fund. Although the lottery is run by volunteers, there are costs for licences, printing, web charges etc. Any surplus after costs is fed back into the lottery to provide, for example, additional prize draws. 70pence is paid into a fund for fan amenities in the Abbey Stadium. 30pence is paid into a Community Fund used for community projects in the Cambridge area. With Play2Win everyone can support both the Club and the community and have some fun whilst doing it! Thanks for your interest and ...Good luck in the draw! The following letter was sent by Martin Girvan from the Sports Grounds Safety Authority following a recent visit to the Abbey Stadium during the Saturday of the Mansfield match. It recognises the importance of the work being completed around the ground to ensure that all areas of the stadium are able to remain open and at full capacity.
Their website is www.safetyatsportsgrounds.org.uk/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Many thanks for the arrangements for the fixture last Saturday I am indeed most grateful. It was most beneficial to have the opportunity to be shown the planned preventive maintenance activity that has been undertaken by Ian Darler and the team of volunteers. There is no doubt that this activity will be extending the life of the facilities until such time as you are able to make a strategic decision with regards to the long-term relocation or redevelopment of the ground. The fixture was appropriately policed and resourced. I am most grateful for confirmation of the revised management documentation outlines the new rolls responsibilities of personnel within the organisation and the revised management procedures whereby the safety officer is in receipt of a hand over documents from the stadium manager confirming the inspection of life safety systems et cetera as part of the pre-match inspection regime. I did discuss with Andy Pickard the potential for the club to register with NaCTSO, (National Counter Terrorism Security Office), for the ACT, (Action Counters Terrorism) . Online e-learning cancers awareness training. This product has been developed to replace Project Griffin and should be made available to all members of staff. If you use the links attached here. You should be able to register with NaCTSO and undertake the training. It takes about 40 minutes to deliver the package. It can be undertaken by the individual learner at home or you could arrange for a group training session for discussions as well. It is becoming increasingly difficult for the CTSA's. to be able to deliver the training as previously undertaken. You may wish to discuss this also with the CTSA I look forward to discussing this with you further and to see you at the safety advisory group this Thursday. As you will know on July 28th members of both the FSF and SD voted to set up a new merged organisation. A key component of the new organisation will be the representatives of the affiliate networks. Despite being in a period of transition to merge the two organisations, we aim to establish who the initial network representatives are in time for the important meeting in the new organisation’s formation which will take place on the 22nd November.
The new merged supporter body will initially consist of 6 networks of affiliates who will each elect 3 people to represent them on a National Council. The 6 networks that were identified and voted on at the respective AGMs of the FSF and SD are as follows: - Premier League - Championship - EFL 1 & EFL 2 (combined) - National game - Supporter-owned football clubs - Fans for Diversity For more information see supporters-direct.org/articles/nomination-process-open-for-network-representatives-for-new-organisation The Following Article is from the October Amber News see more here
Concerning the streaming of matches I believe that most supporters would be against the proposals. The FSF survey of supporters in 2017 recorded that 72% voted in favour of keeping the 3pm Saturday blackout which was put into place to protect lower league clubs like ourselves.
Not only could it affect the match day revenues. A reduction in attendances would cause the match day atmosphere to change. Atmosphere and social interaction is something that attracts supporters to come to matches. So does the habit of attending live matches. I understand that Northampton Town, Exeter City, Morecambe, Accrington Stanley, Portsmouth and Sunderland all suffered their lowest league attendances of the season when matches were streamed on a recent Saturday. Clubs need to increase the walk-up attendance from away club supporters visiting. Live streaming does not help to achieve that. At the moment it is only certain weekends and matches being considered, but this proposal is seen by many as a beginning of something that could develop further. Last season it was only for an overseas’ audience. That has changed already. Several years ago one chairman mentioned that when streaming began it would need clubs to lower ticket prices to encourage supporters to attend matches. This would be required to create the match day atmosphere needed for television to follow the sport. Empty terraces and empty seats will turn audiences off from watching matches on television and will ultimately reduce the income sourced from those media outlets. A recent Supporters Direct article on the subject can be seen here https://supporters-direct.org/articles/another-nail-in-the-coffin-for-live-football |
