This evening we welcome the supporters, officials and players of Sheffield Wednesday to the Abbey Stadium. Sheffield Wednesday is a club stepped in history having been formed in 1867 and being one of the oldest clubs in the world. Their early Chairman Charles Clegg had a huge impact and influence in the early years of football throughout his time over 51 years on the Football Association where he was known as "the great old man of football" He was knighted in 1927 for ‘services to the Board of Trade and the Ministry of Labour’. This could have been for work with local youth and employment committees. His influence and religious views had a great influence on the club. Some people believe that the Owls during his time were the moral club of the period. Charles was a strict teetotaller and non-smoker. He also had a deep religious conviction. His favourite quote was "nobody ever gets lost on a straight road". He was known to frown on those who drank before matches and also disliked gambling. He feared that professionalism would be a corrupting influence on the game and fought a long losing battle against it throughout his administrative career.
October is Black History Month. Earlier this year the Cambridge United family sadly lost Attu Mensah who was the clubs’ first black player, He was soon followed by university student Alva Anderson. However, it was Dennis Walker who captained the side when it won the Southern League who most supporters will remember. He was also the first black player to turn out for Manchester United. He made over 200 appearances for Cambridge United. It is Brendon Batson who made probably the most difference during his career in football. Following the end to his playing days, Batson was appointed as the deputy chief executive of the Professional Footballers' Association in 1984. This month the EFL did a feature about his career and it can be seen here https://www.efl.com/news/2021/october/black-history-month-brendon-batson/ The club has this month reiterated its commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion through a statement which can be read on their website Although there has been a lot of work done in the past the Board last year recognised that we needed to do more to prioritise this right across the Club. We did so by recognising that diversity of thought and approach makes us stronger and at the same time wanting to be a Club that everyone feels is for them and where everyone feels welcome regardless of race, gender or sexual orientation. There will always be more to do and everyone is committed to trying to take positive steps forward. This is a continuous journey however below are some of the steps that have been taken across the Club over the last twelve months: · Establishing a Board Sub Group · Improving club practices · Signing up to the FA Diversity Code · Taking part in the PL and EFL Player to Coach Scheme · Targeting Under Represented Fan Groups · Deepening Community Work Through the Trust This is a team effort right across the Club - Board, staff, players at every level. To ensure it develops in the future and it becomes a cornerstone that the club is based on forever. It is also down to every supporter to show their commitment in making football a safe, welcoming and enjoyable place for everyone Please look after yourself and enjoy following the team home and away this season. This afternoon we welcome the supporters, officials and players of Ipswich Town to the Abbey Stadium. In the past the clubs have mostly played each other in Friendlies and Testimonial matches. The sides have rarely met in League matches. However, there are many people who have strong interest and bond with both sides. Ipswich supporters assisted with the collection we held for Justin Edinburgh and have helped the Cambridge United many times over the years. Their SLO Liz Edwards is someone who is always willing to offer help and advice to me when it is required.
During the summer we were probably all excited by the Olympics and Paralympics in Tokyo. Over many seasons I have been fortunate to meet Will Hipwell on match days. Will took part in Tokyo as part of the Great Britain Boccia Squad and his experiences taking part are below. -: The idea of the game is simple. One side has six red balls and the other six blue balls. The aim is to get your balls closer to the white target ball, the 'jack', than your opponent. To start an end, one side will throw the jack. They will then throw their first ball trying to get it as close as possible. The other side then attempts to throw their ball closer. After that, the side whose ball is not closest to the jack throws the next ball. Once all balls have been played, points are awarded. The side that is closest to the jack receives a point for every ball they have nearer than their opponent’s closest ball. I’ve been a member of the GB Boccia squad since 2015. Having missed out on selections for the Paralympics in Rio in 2016, this was my debut Paralympic Games. It was really good experience. I arrived the week before the competition started, which helped me to acclimatise to the temperature and time difference. When I first got there, I kept waking up at 2am – but eventually I was able to settle into my surroundings at the athlete’s village. I was also able to train at the venue, which helped me get used to the court surface and prepare for the competition. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 restrictions, we had to stay in the athlete’s village so couldn’t really take in the sights of Tokyo. I competed in both the individual and Team competition. My first game was against the world champion which was an exciting challenge – and my first ball of the whole competition was perfect, which gave me a boost! Whilst I didn’t win any of my individual matches I scored points in all but my first one. My opponents from Slovakia and Belgium were well known to me having played them in previous competitions, I had a game plan for all of my matches. In the Team competition we came close to beating China who are a very good team. We were drawing 7-7 going into the last end but they played some world class shots to win the match 11-7. We then lost to Thailand but in the process, we gained a valuable insight into how they play which will hopefully stand us in good stead for the next Paralympics in Paris in 2024! We won against Argentina which was a great achievement as last time we played them was at the World Championships in 2018 and they won that game so it felt good to get revenge! Unfortunately, we lost our final group game against Russia. It was disappointing not to finish on a high. There are still aspects of our game that, as a team we need to improve but we were all happy with our overall performance. I wanted to go to Tokyo and give it my best shot, which I did, so from that point of view I achieved what I wanted. When I got home I attended Channel 4’s Paralympics GB Athletes’ Homecoming show! It was a great event, all the athletes met up at the Hilton hotel beforehand where the Prime Minister Boris Johnson gave a speech and congratulated everyone on our achievements. Then we went to Wembley Arena and lined up backstage and had the chance to enter the arena in front of a full crowd! Made me realise just how much support there is for the Paralympics! Adam Hills and Josh Widdicombe interviewed some of the Paralympians, which was great to watch. I want to say a big thank you to Cambridge United for their support. I was delighted to receive tweets from Mark Bonner, Greg Taylor and Harrison Dunk wishing me good luck. We don’t have to achieve the heights that Will has, but we can all take part in some of the wellbeing activities that the Cambridge United Community Trust offer follow the link for more information about these https://www.cuctrust.co.uk/ Please look after yourself and enjoy following the team home and away this season. A million steps from October 1st 2021 to January 1st 2022 to help Shout 85258 Having been approached by MIND and the EFL two years ago to use my journey as a case study through a difficult period of mental health following an accident I had no hesitation in agreeing to write my story in the hope it may help other people come to terms with challenging times in their own lives when dealing with mental health. My enthusiasm to help others has continued. I had to fight depression and PTSD for 6 years, sometimes working very long days and nights come home, go to bed, up again early the next morning and onto the next day having to pretend that nothing was wrong whilst receiving treatment for my condition. I feel people who have not suffered from any form of mental health cannot really have any idea what it is like or understand that depression can be constant. Some days it is not as bad as others but on a bad day it knocks you down before you can even get out of bed. Other days it is like wearing a mask to hide the way you are feeling which in itself can be exhausting. I am now thankfully in a much better place and have come through that period but it was one of the most challenging journeys in my life. I was fortunate in that when I hit rock bottom I received amazing treatment from the NHS CPFT and had a few friends who came to my aid to offer support after I had been diagnosed and accepted that I needed HELP. Several of whom worked for the police, Fire and Ambulance service and had been through mental health issues themselves. They were the last people on earth that I would have imagined to have suffered with their mental health. Since my recovery and publication of my book Life’s A Pitch and writing the chapter LIFE CHANGING I have been approached by several people who had been suffering in silence with their own mental health problems and thankfully I have been able to help them in a small way and they are now currently also in a much better place. Depression is not like having a broken leg you don’t have a plaster cast on so people cannot see how you are feeling? If you know somebody who is going through a difficult time or have the slightest doubt about somebody who may be struggling REACH OUT. Even if you don’t think it will help DO IT even if you just ask “are you okay?” And then ask again “are you sure you are okay?” Let me tell you from my own experience it is very easy to dismiss the first “are you okay?” but the second “are you okay?” prompted me to talk. It is very likely that this person will feel very alone and you talking to them could make all the difference. It is important at this point in time with the world as it is, the Covid pandemic and pressures of life to take care of our own and other people’s mental health and welfare. We must offer support to others who may be struggling in silence to enable them to get help and recover and hopefully find that eureka moment that I and a number of other people including the comic genius Bob Mortimer found when recovering. Having personally suffered with depression and PTSD I appreciate how important it is to get help & support and to be able to talk to people about how you are feeling. Below are a few things I went through personally - Feeling low, worried, lonely, unhappy, having panic attacks, not sleeping, thinking other people would not understand, unable to talk to family and friends. Feeling I just needed to man-up. Eating all day long, putting on huge amounts of weight, feeling I was a lost cause, unable to socialise in public, hiding away, avoiding conversation, feeling trapped in a transparent bubble and not being able to break-out, loss of interest in hobbies etc and far worse things? But let me assure you that I had never experienced anything like this before my accident and it shows how your life can change in an instant.. I JUST WISH I HAD TOLD PEOPLE HOW I WAS FEELING SOONER AS THINGS DO GET BETTER WHEN YOU TALK. I now talk openly about my mental health and it is becoming a normal thing to do. Why not talk about how you are feeling or your mental health instead of the weather. Or in the words of Tears for Fears, Shout, Shout Let It all Out. I hope that both Companies and individuals will support this challenge and also start the discussion about mental health in their work place and at home. My aim is that the funds this challenge will raise goes some way to helping others. All money raised through this challenge will be donated to SHOUT 85258UK Shout is a 24 hour crisis text line, giving support to anyone who needs it. Thank You. Ian Darler B.E.M Cambridge United FC / Stadium Manager Thank you for your continued support of the CUFC Lottery.

Create a log in 3. Click on ‘activities ’ 4. Choose some activities to complete and take a photo of the activity in action – a bit like this incredibly goofy picture of Education Manager Ash Dyer below who brushed his teeth without leaving the tap running to score 2 goals!! |
We’ll be keeping an eye on who is helping us along the way and will be doing plenty in the way of handing out certificates and rewards for those that help us on our journey! You can keep track of our progress on the website and also share your involvement on social media by tagging us @CUCTrust. There is also a schools pack which can be used by Teachers to create fun, interactive lessons around improving the environment and climate
