Supporters Direct End of Year Message from Ashley Brown,CEO

21/12/2016

Another interesting and challenging year for football passes with The FA coming under particular scrutiny on a number of fronts. Clearly The FA needs to reform its governance structure so that it better reflects the modern game and at last there seems to be an appetite from Government to ensure it happens. However, it is also important to acknowledge there are many hard working people at The FA, delivering to a high level alongside an executive who are probably as keen for reform as the rest of us are. SD will continue to work hard to influence that reform and in particularly encourage wider representation of supporters in the game.

2016 has seen the first structured dialogue meetings take place with both the EPL and EFL, something that we now need to see reflected down at club level. Clearly some Trusts will find it much easier to engage with their clubs, but where difficulty arises please get in touch to see if we can assist in brokering those discussions.

In early 2017 you should see the release of our new SD Hub, an online platform that should enable better interaction across our network and hopefully encourage others to join. There will also be opportunities for individual trusts to benefit from the development by managing their own mini-hubs and social networks.

In the New Year SD will be aiming to provide a more focussed approach to how we work with and support our Trusts, recognising the differences between different types of Trusts and becoming more responsive of their collective needs. Core to this initiative is that fact I’d like us to have more staff doing real delivery work directly with our Trusts and that will form part of our renewed funding discussions early in 2017.

The core work of Supporters Direct remains as it always has but we also need to evolveand diversify, adapting to the modern game. Ideas from the membership are important to us and please don’t feel that these can only be shared at the annual conference, get in touch and share your thoughts, hopefully the new platform will encourage you do to so.

Fundamental to the success of the organisation is our board and England & Wales, Scotland and Rugby League councils, all of which are about to hold elections. I would like to encourage members to consider standing, we need enthusiastic people who feel they have something to offer and would like to help drive Supporters Direct forward in the coming years. Our existing board & council members come from a wide range of backgrounds, bringing different skills with them. SD is keen to promote and embrace diversity and as such I hope we see this reflected in the range of candidates.

Finally I’d like to thank all Trusts and clubs for all their hard work throughout the year and wish everyone a happy Christmas and the very best of luck for 2017.

Power to Change (P2C) Funding Award

We are very pleased to announce that we have been successful in securing funding to enhance our offer to community owned clubs in 2017/18.

Power to Change, the organisation set up to grow and support community businesses in England will fund us to hold a workshop, club learning visit or webinar once a month until June 2018. If your club would like to host a workshop or learning visit or if you have a particular topic that you’d like us to discuss please email James Mathie as we plan the next 6 months of activity.

Better co-ordination and representation for members within SD’s governance structure

During 2016 a network group was set-up to recommend how SD UK’s networks and governance under the Board are best organised and structured. Represent ation was drawn from members in the Premier League (PL), English Football League (EFL), Non-league (NL) and supporter owned club communities. The consultation showed both a desire for individual network activities and priorities but also for collaboration across networks. As a result the England and Wales Football Council and the SD Board have agreed the following approach:

For SD to facilitate network groups for PL Trusts, EFL Trusts, NL Trusts and supporter owned clubs to meet at least twice a year on topics relevant to SD’s mission and expertise (if there is sufficient demand).

For each of the 4 network areas to have a ‘champion’ who can adequately represent them at the Council meeting. The quarterly meeting will have an agenda aligned to these 4 network areas with m inutes shared with the membership. Initially these roles will be drawn from the existing Council members or will be co-opted if a suitable person can’t be found to represent each network. The Council will make a recommendation at the 2017 AGM whether they think these 4 network champions should be elected in following years.

The Board has recommended that similar network reviews are carried out in Scotland and Rugby League to establish their member’s priorities and fair representation. For Info press button1 below

Hi-vis jackets and low-level bother: a steward's view of a football match

19/12/2016

Picture

Working as a steward can be a thankless task – being called a ‘lanky streak of piss’ isn’t pleasant – but the camaraderie and the cash keep my Saturdays interesting By James Marsland for When Saturday Comes, of the Guardian Sport Network

There are several thankless tasks in football. The referee’s assistant running the line, who is destined to stand near the crowd and be barracked for every wrong decision and every right one that goes against the supporters’ team, is one. Each of the people whose job it is to tidy the terraces of spilled pies and trampled hot dogs hours after the fans have gone home may feel that their job is wholly unrewarded. And somewhere in there, gazing out with a fixed expression from under a black beanie hat and clad in a hi-vis jacket, is the steward. I know this because I am among their silent number.

People get into stewarding because they need the money, because they love the game, or because of a combination of the two. For a regular wage earner, the money you get can be put towards your holiday fund or to provide a welcome boost to your wages at the end of the week. And for people like me, whose love of football outstrips their ability to pay to watch games, it’s an opportunity to be in and around a club and to feel a strange kind of kinship with it, and with the other stewards.

Most Saturdays start with ironing my white shirt and assembling the modest amount of additional kit that counts as the stewards’ uniform: tie, black trousers, safety boots, ID badge, luminous jacket and any hats or gloves in muted shades that I need to keep myself warm in a job that, by definition, involves standing around for very long periods doing very little. You need to get to the stadium by 1pm for a 3pm kick-off, although in practice people tend to get there earlier to have a cup of tea and an aged biscuit in the stewards’ room, and, more importantly, to talk about the week just gone, to swap informal advice about the visiting team and to dwell on lurid stories of crowd trouble at other grounds. CLICK HERE TO WATCH SOME HIGHLIGHTS OF 2016
Please find below the link to the Away Fans Guide provided by Stevenage. The guide provides a whole host of information about visiting Stevenage FC,  things to do pre-match, food and drink options plus some FAQs. You can also download a copy below

http://www.stevenagefc.com/documents/away-fans-guide-2016-v3160-3317806.pdf

There are a couple of additional points:
  • Please note as this game falls on Boxing Day there are no railway services on Great Northern so there are no trains between Stevenage and Cambridge. However any CUFC fans who find themselves in Stevenage town centre pre-match will be able to take advantage of our shuttle bus service which is just £1 return from Stevenage bus station and Stevenage railway station to The Lamex Stadium. More details on this service can be found in the above link.

  • Stevenage operate an allocated seating policy inside the stadium. With CUFC likely to have a large, if not capacity following on Boxing Day, they ask that fans do sit in the seats on their tickets so not to inconvenience fellow supporters.

EEDS UNITED TICKET DEADLINE BROUGHT FORWARD DUE TO HIGH DEMAND
With ticket sales for Cambridge United's Emirates FA Cup Third Round tie against Leeds United flying, the Club have decided to bring forward the chance for supporters with three or more loyalty points to secure their place.

This week, season ticket holders have been quick to reserve their place for the fixture at the Cambs Glass Stadium on Monday 9th January, with demand soaring since going on sale at 9am on Monday, with many benefiting from the exclusive offer to half-season and season ticket holders that allowed them to take up the option to secure an additional ticket for the fixture.

Due to the vast majority of half-season and season ticket holders having secured their tickets, supporters who have amassed three or more loyalty points over the course of 2016/17 season can now also secure one ticket per person, in the ticket office and by calling 012223 566 500 until 5pm tonight and tomorrow.

Season ticket holders who have not yet purchased tickets have until 6pm on Saturday to reserve their usual seats. Supporters with past purchase history can buy tickets from 9am on Monday 19th December.

Mascot and Match Day Experience packages for the Emirates FA Cup clash with Leeds United on Monday 9th January.

Mascot Packages

Following a large volume of enquiries to be mascot for the FA Cup tie the Club have decided that a ballot is the best way to decide who will take up the eleven spaces for FREE.

A draw will take place on Friday 23rd December in which all children booked to be a mascot for any of the remaining 13 home games this season beginning with the U’s clash against Crewe Alexandra, will be entered into the draw to be mascot LIVE ON TV on Monday 9th January.

The worst case scenario is that you register your child to be mascot for another game, which includes the chance to meet the U’s, walk out on to the pitch and visit the dressing room, a perfect Christmas present for any Junior U! Best case scenario is that your child gets two amazing experiences, one of which being live on BT Sport.

Mascot places are available to girls and boys aged 4-12 years old for all remaining games at the Cambs Glass Stadium this season.

Book a mascot place online here or email cuyd@cambridge-united.co.uk for more information.

Match Day Experience

Enquires have been coming in thick and fast for teams to take part in our popular Match Day Experience! A team can tour the Cambs Glass Stadium, meet some of the players and form a guard of honour on the pitch for the big FA Cup tie.

The same ballot process as for mascots applies. Any team booked for Match Day Experience for any of the remaining 12 games this season will go into a draw to gain a free place for their team versus Leeds United.

Match Day Experience includes tickets for ten children (players) and 2 adults (coaches), a stadium tour, opportunities to meet the players and forming a guard of honour for the players as they come out onto the pitch in front of the BT Sport TV cameras.

The worst case scenario is that you sign your team up for a great experience! Best case scenario is that your team get two, one being the FA Cup match!

The draw takes place on Friday 23 December along with the mascot draw. Book online by clicking here.
