Big moment for sport in Cambridge’ as Grosvenor confirm sporting village plan is due for submission

A "big moment for sport in Cambridge" is looming after Cambridge United confirmed it would be pursuing plans for its new sporting village.

The club and developers Grosvenor have long harboured aspirations for a state-of-the-art facility in Trumpington, to transform sporting provision in Cambridge.

It had also pledged to revamp the existing Abbey Stadium on Newmarket Road, rather than moving this out to the south of the city as was proposed under previous iterations of the plan.

The development would not need any public money, instead being paid for by 520 new homes at the back of Trumpington Meadows in the greenbelt.

Doubts had been growing as to whether these plans would come to fruition, though.
