Cambridge Fans United has appointed Robert Osbourn to succeed Dave Matthew Jones as Chair of the Fans Trust Board, following his standing down after more than 10 years in the post and his election to the Cambridge United Board as Fans-elected Director.

Mr Osbourn has been Vice-Chair for the past 6 years and can usually be found in the CFU van at the front of the ground on match days where, as well as selling programmes and tickets for the half time draw, he is available to listen to the concerns of supporters.

“When someone like Dave is there to lead the organisation, there is a tendency simply to let him get on with it, secure in the knowledge that he will always have the interests of the club and its fans in the forefront of his thinking”, he reflects.

“Dave’s elevation to the Board provides the opportunity for us to re-evaluate who we are and what we should be doing to contribute to the success of the club in the future, whilst standing up for an increasing number of paying customers, as it continues to grow. For me, one of the challenges is to engage better with a new and younger generation of fans and for CFU to be relevant to them as well as to our traditional membership.”

“The next few months will see how the local authorities respond to planning applications from the club’s landlords, Grosvenor, which, if supported, will allow the club to develop and grow, both for fans on match days and also within the local community and more widely. The proposed sporting village between Trumpington Meadows and the M11 offers so much in the way of opportunities for people of all ages to benefit from. That, in turn, funded by the building of extra housing, adjoining the existing development in Trumpington, will enable a partial redevelopment of the ageing Abbey Stadium and the addition of local facilities which the Abbey area really needs.”

“I look forward to being part of all of that and for Cambridge United to cement its place in a successful Cambridge. There is so much to do; so much we shall be able to be proud of and so much we can achieve together.”
