Big moment for sport in Cambridge’ as Grosvenor confirm sporting village plan is due for submission
A "big moment for sport in Cambridge" is looming after Cambridge United confirmed it would be pursuing plans for its new sporting village. The club and developers Grosvenor have long harboured aspirations for a state-of-the-art facility in Trumpington, to transform sporting provision in Cambridge. It had also pledged to revamp the existing Abbey Stadium on Newmarket Road, rather than moving this out to the south of the city as was proposed under previous iterations of the plan. The development would not need any public money, instead being paid for by 520 new homes at the back of Trumpington Meadows in the greenbelt. Doubts had been growing as to whether these plans would come to fruition, though. How to build a new stadium – by those who have
10 November 2015 FFT’s Chris Flanagan asks the experts how to move ground. Turns out it involves orchestras, roses, a Queen impersonator, Christmas cake and Ken Bates... After almost a quarter of a century in the stadium business, Paul Fletcher chuckles as he remembers how hard he tried to avoid ever getting involved in the first place. "I took the job as commercial manager at Huddersfield Town on condition that I had nothing to do with the new stadium they were planning," he tells FFT. "But within 12 months a new chairman took over, dragged me into the boardroom one afternoon and said, 'It’s your job to build us a new stadium'. I didn’t know anything about the building industry, or the stadium industry." Today the former Burnley and Bolton Wanderers striker is working on stadium projects in three different continents. His work at the McAlpine Stadium as it was first known, then at the Reebok Stadium and the new Wembley, quickly made him one of the most respected men in the business. In May we published our first set of proposals for the Cambridge Community Sporting Trust at a set of exhibitions and on our consultation website.
I wanted to let you know that we have had a high and extremely positive response so far to them, with over 1,300 comments. They show that:
Those who feel positive believe these proposals principally meet a clear need; provide something for all and are high quality
Over the coming months we will: - Gather more comments and thoughts: the more information we get at this stage of the project, the better we believe the project outcomes will be. - Review and where necessary re-draft the proposals: to reflect feedback. - Publish updated plans: we will let you know as soon as we’ve done that. Contact Us | Join | News | Lottery ![]() Many of you will have now seen details of the latest plans for the Cambridge Community Sporting Trust at the Abbey Stadium and in Trumpington. Grosvenor and USS are currently running a consultation on its plans to redevelop the north stand of the Abbey - making the stadium more community focussed - and create a Sporting Village at Trumpington where the club and its Community Trust will continue to grow. Both proposals are essential to the project's success. Unless planning approval is obtained at both, nothing will happen at either as the two sites are intrinsically linked by cross-funding, operation and a single management structure running both, in the form of the Cambridge Community Sporting Trust. As a Cambridge United fan with an invested interest in this vision, we wanted to make sure that you have the best possible opportunity to give us support for both proposals.
