2016 Volunteers’ Week took place between the 1st and the 12th of June and at Supporters Direct we would like to celebrate the value of volunteers to football, especially to supporter-owned clubs.
There are many reasons for volunteering in football, such as gaining new skills or socialising, but on many occasions fans do it just because they want to feel part of the team and want to give something back to organisations that have played a big role in their lives. The attachment some people have to the football clubs they support and to their communities often makes them want to make an impact to these environments without earning any sum of money in return. This attachment is really evident regarding fan-owned clubs, which at the same time give more opportunities to volunteer. Those are business benefits of supporter ownership in comparison with privately owned clubs. We all get stressed. The question is: what do you do about it?
This is the theme of Men's Health Week 2016. It matters because if we don’t release stress, it can turn into something more serious. This year, one in four of us will develop a mental health problem. That is odds of 3 to 1. Or about the same as France or Germany winning the Euro 2016 football. In other words, it’s likely to happen sooner or later if we let stress build. Kevin Wallsgrove (pictured here with one of his heros Steve Bull), will be attending the game today against AFC Wimledon as Abbey Stadium is the final ground he needs to attend to complete the full 92 stadiums of the football league.
He has visited most of the grounds following Wolves up and down the country however in 2010 he worked out that he only had 13 left to go and they were all in league 2. Visiting all 92 grounds is a life long dream for him and a massive tick off his bucket list so he decided to try and complete them on the weekends when Wolves didnt have a game. The few he did have left were quite a journey away (Hartlepool, Carlisle, Torquay etc) so he would make it a weekend trip. To that end if my dad ever asks my mum of she wants to go away for the weekend her reply is always 'what ground are you going to now?' Or 'who are Wolves playing' haha! Once he has been to the The Abbey Stadium he will have been to 102 grounds in total (10 of which are now non-league). There are also 20 teams where he has been to both the old and new stadiums i.e Filbert Street and the King Power Stadium, Highbury and The Emirates, the list goes on. Who knows where he will go from here, maybe try to visit all of the non league grounds? Are there any Cambridge United Supporters who have visited all 92 grounds or who has done the most? Robert Osbourn’s “View from the Van”
The CFU caravan is, as many will know, something of a misnomer given that it is, in reality, a former food catering trailer badged with CFU logos and a wide service hatch down one side. Nevertheless, it serves its purpose pretty well, acting as both a base for CFU on matchdays and as a sales point for the football club so far as programmes, 50/50 draw tickets and other items are concerned. On a matchday, the CFU ‘van can be found in the front car park at the Abbey Stadium, close to the road, having been manhandled into place from its usual resting place betwixt the Newmarket Road End turnstiles and the side wall of the Supporters Club. My usual routine before matches is to stock up with programmes and 50/50 tickets, before hauling the ‘van through the side gate leading to the driveway. If I’m lucky, one of the stewards will be able to lend a hand or I’ll try to grab a friendly passer-by – even the club Chairman has found himself in the right place at the right time, on occasion! After rearranging the furniture (removing the noticeboards to the outside) and sorting out the stock, it’s usually “shutters going up” – a bit like Dinnerladies – about two and a half hours before kick-off, when regular early arrivals appear for their usual orders. The myriad of other delights which the CFU ‘van offers include, as you would expect, the facility to join CFU or to renew a subscription. You can also sign up for membership of the CUFC Lottery, which is managed and run by Brian Thorby and a small group of other CFU members. The numbers involved are growing steadily and this means that the prize fund is bigger and more is raised for the club and its charities. At just £2 a week, it is a great way of supporting Cambridge United. We also have CUFC Legends scratchcards at £1 and a full set of 32 will get you a free poster to display them. 100 Years of Coconuts has a variety of merchandise, including polo shirts, sweatshirts, and hats available to order in several colour choices, with the regular “Happy Harry” logo and now the colourful and very popularl retro club logo. Delivery is usually a week from ordering. We also have a selection of coasters and fridge magnets. The ‘van also acts as a base for the Abbey Helpers – the folk in purple T shirts who distribute sweeties as well as welcoming fans to games. It is the collection and return point for the Audio Description headsets which allow fans (home and visiting) whose eyesight is poor to receive a detailed description of all the action on the pitch from our team of dedicated describers, and this is really appreciated by them. (Idea: maybe some refs could benefit from having a set…..?) My partner in crime at the ‘van is Terry Wilby, CFU’s Membership Secretary, who brings with him the card payment device which allows CFU members who are without cash to use their card to settle their subs. We have stocks of CFU books such as “100 Years – 50 Memorable matches” and Wendy “Woo” Johnson’s matchday poetry – good value - just £4. When available, we also have player topped cupcakes, loving crafted by Lyndsey Halbert, and available to pre-order in boxes of 4 or 6. Our regular customers stop by for a football chat and often ask the question “Is Dave about?” Of course, Dave Matthew Jones is usually about and sometimes we can even find him! Do pay us a visit. We shall be pleased to see you and to relieve you of some cash in the cause of Cambridge United. I would, however, like to clear up any confusion about the 50/50 draw – when we sell you your tickets, they have the same chance of winning as any others – it’s the person who draws the winning numbers you should blame if your numbers are not called Click links below to Contact CFU | Join CFU | News | Join CUFC Lottery (It costs just 20 pounds to join CFU and your membership makes a difference)
In the age of football clubs becoming billionaires' playthings it does no harm to go back to their beginnings. The English game's ragged, inspirational, late-Victorian roots should be better known but its development has been so phenomenally rapid it has rarely had time to take stock of the culture it has left behind.
Supporters may be only dimly aware but several senior clubs were formed as church teams, encouraged by Christian men in grim industrial districts who believed that sport offered physical exercise for lads with little to occupy them, and nourishing human values too: teamwork, friendship, courage, self-reliance. The realisation that Everton were formed by boys in the bible class at St Domingo's Methodist Chapel in 1878 recently led Peter Lupson, a semi-retired languages teacher from the Wirral, to devote 11 years to researching the founding stories of Everton and 10 other clubs established by churches: Aston Villa, Barnsley, Birmingham City, Bolton Wanderers, Fulham, Manchester City, Queens Park Rangers, Southampton, Swindon Town and Tottenham Hotspur. http://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2006/dec/20/footballsforgottenmissionfo?CMP=share_btn_tw Click links below to Contact CFU | Join CFU | News | Join CUFC Lottery (It costs just 20 pounds to join CFU and your membership makes a difference)

Cambridge Fans United to support Foodbank
Click here for full details www.cambridgefansunited.org/cambridge-city-foodbank.html Today, 14/12/2015, Cambridge Fans United and Cambridge City Foodbank announced that they will work together to help local people who are in hardship. Although Cambridge is a City of innovation and wealth, costs are high and there are thousands of people in hardship, sometimes having to choose between food and heat. The fans and supporters of Cambridge United Football Club understand the importance of teamwork and supporting each other and Dave Matthew-Jones, Chairman of the Supporters Trust, believes the same spirit applies to helping those in need. Dave Matthew-Jones said "CFU are really proud to be associated with Cambridge City Foodbank. This is a time of year where, for many, the pressures of trying to provide for themselves and their families can prove really difficult. We would encourage everyone who can help to do so. Even a small amount can mean a lot and make a difference. Cambridge has families and individuals on the breadline. If you can help with some food or a donation to the Energy Voucher Scheme then please do so". CFU will encourage all supporters to make a donation towards the Foodbank Energy Voucher Scheme or to make donations of needed food items at a local supermarket. Through CFU’s network, it will be possible to ensure that the right types of food are donated so that those receiving have all they need to make nutritious meals. Cambridge City Foodbank enables people who have plenty, and a heart to help others, to donate in a way that helps directly. CCFb’s partner agencies are in contact with those most in need and can give them a voucher to come to the foodbank. The voucher is exchanged for food or to top-up of a pre-payment meter cards for gas or electricity. Jon Edney, Coordinator/Director of Cambridge City Foodbank said “We really welcome Cambridge Fans United’s support. This shows what can happen when people from many different backgrounds work together with a common goal. It will have a real impact on real people this winter.” Cambridge Fans United is the supporters trust associated with Cambridge United. It is the 4th largest shareholder with over 3 million shares in the club. CFU was formed in 2000 and is a member of Supporters Direct the governing body set up by the Government at the time. CFU has nearly 500 members and helps to promote the club while representing and canvassing supporters’ issues. Cambridge city foodbank is part of the Trussell Trust network of food banks in the UK. Food is collected locally, warehoused and then distributed through seven centres around Cambridge and in Cambourne. Last year more than 4000 people received support and there has been a 4% increase during 2015. Cambridge City Foodbank started an energy voucher scheme in December 2013 since then they have redeemed 337 energy vouchers at the cost of £19,200, helping 261 households in fuel poverty. We are now 11 league games into the 2015/16 season with a total of 14 points. At the same period last season we also had 14 points.
We have played 4 games against teams currently in the top half of the table. Our record in these 4 games is, Won 0, Drawn 2, Lost 2, For 6, Against 9. We have played 7 games against teams currently in the bottom half of the table. Our record in these 7 games is, Won 3, Drawn 3, Lost 1, For 8, Against 6. If our current form continues we shall reach 58 points by the end of the season and finish in 15th place. This would be an improvement of 7 points on last season. It was in February 1990 that I made my first trip to Champion Hill for a Vauxhall-Opal (Isthmian) League Premier Division match between Dulwich Hamlet and St Albans City. As a youth, I was singular in my interests and the opportunity to visit the home of one of the former giants of amateur football, a stadium that had played host to Olympic football in 1948, before its demolition and conversion into something a little more user-friendly was too good to pass up, even for a sixteen year old boy who should have had more pressing things on his mind, like girls and booze. A couple of decades worth of neglect had certainly taken their toll on the old place, though. By 1990, only the cavernous main stand, smelling slightly of dry rot, pock-marked with elderly men with greased back hair and more than a hint of the greyhound track about them, remained safe to use – the rest of the ground was closed off, though the weeds growing up through the crumbling concrete terracing were clearly visible, even from my vantage point, more than a hundred yards away.
This was non-league football in London during the 1980s. Around the periphery of the capital city, at Walthamstow, Leytonstone, Ilford and beyond, the former homes of amateur football were crumbling. The reasons for the decline and fall of amateur football and its struggle to find an identity in a world that no longer distinguished between amateurs and professionals are many and varied, but may be summed up by the phrase “changing times.” The amateur football clubs of London saw the distinction between themselves and professional clubs formally ended in 1974, but with crowds on the non-league game already starting to have dropped more than a decade earlier, maintaining the interest of local people and in turn the cost of maintaining these big amateur grounds of the past became an increasingly uphill battle. Cambridge United Fans’ Charter has made a difference, says Dave Doggett
Dave Doggett insists Cambridge United's Fans' Charter has had a positive effect on the matchday experience at the Abbey. The guidelines for supporters' behaviour were launched jointly with Cambridge Fans United last month and United chairman Doggett felt there was a noticeable change in the atmosphere at the ground as a result. His view comes despite admitting United had been reprimanded by the Football League for an incident that saw two people throw bottles on to the pitch in frustration at a refereeing decision during their season-opening 3-0 win against Newport County. In his programme notes from last Saturday's 3-0 defeat to Crawley, Doggett warned the FA and the League could fine United or potentially close sections of the Abbey if there was a repeat of such an incident.
