Cambridge United players are fit for purpose as they begin pre-season training

The sun is shining, the poles are laid out and clipboards and stopwatches are primed, while 20-odd men are filled with a mixture of excitement and dread.

It can mean only one thing – pre-season training is under way at Cambridge United.
With professional footballers knowing they cannot afford to let themselves go once the season is over in this day and age, everyone came back to the Cambs Glass Stadium freshly-tanned, looking as if they were ready for business.

Shaun Derry: Cambridge United in great shape for start of pre-season

Shaun Derry was delighted to see his Cambridge United players return for pre-season training in great shape and ready to prepare for an exciting start to the 2016/17 campaign.

United manager Derry, assistant Joe Dunne and the rest of the coaching team ran the rule over the squad on their first morning back at the Cambs Glass Stadium yesterday.

And the boss believes the groundwork which has now started will stand them in good stead for an opening 11 days of the season which includes a home match against Barnet, a visit from Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup – which has been confirmed for a 7.45pm kick off on Tuesday, August 9 – and back-to-back away trips to relegated Colchester and Doncaster.

With the U’s set to face the 1981 UEFA Cup Champions and the 1982 European Cup champions in the space of four days this pre-season, the Amber Army can enjoy watching Shaun Derry’s men put themselves to the test against two extremely tough opponents.

Cambridge United’s first team players have today donned their new trainingwear for the first time this season and now supporters can purchase their kit in-store and online as well.
