George Harris - The reason why I chose Cambridge United and not City. Why did you become Black & Amber?

It's February 1970. I am looking forward to the World Cup and seeing England retain the trophy. My family had just moved from Wokingham (near Reading) to Shelford.

I was at Shelford school playing football in the playground. I am asked who I supported United or City. I remembered reading that George Harris had recently moved to United from Reading.

He was joined by Colin Meldrum who had also played for Reading and who went on to score the first league goal for United against Lincoln.

So George Harris is one of the reasons why I have supported the club for nearly 50 years.

What was the reason you did so? Was it a player, a match or an individual that made you become Black & Amber?

I was born in Cambridge city( mill road maternity hospital) I lived in Bedford and used to watch Cambridge United in the southern league playing Bedford and started to support United much to my dad and grandads disgust as they were both city fans. I have supported them since and that 55 years ago. Up United
