Welcome to Sporting Memories We believe in the power of stories to reignite connections between generations and combat the effects of dementia, depression and loneliness in communities. We spark organisations into action giving them the tools and know- how in order to help save the past for the present.
Who We Are: The Sporting Memories Foundation is a charity like no other. We support older people across the UK living with dementia, depression and loneliness by engaging them in social activities and helping them to recall memories of watching or playing sport. By sharing memories of sporting moments and tapping into a passion for sport we help people to connect with others and with their past, reawakening positive thoughts and feelings that otherwise remain hidden away. Once sparked the desire to have a go at other physical activities can return and we encourage and facilitate physical activities, inclusive sports and games that everyone can take part in, to promote physical health as well as mental health. Our work aims to challenge stereotypical views of ageing and mental health issues, to reduce stigma around issues like dementia and depression and to help reduce loneliness and enable older people to live well. The money raised from the Foundation goes towards recruiting, training, managing and supporting volunteers working on Sporting Memories projects in the UK What We Do: We are a charity which has grown organically over the last four years to establish weekly groups across communities to support older people. Groups are set up in partnerships with organisations such local authorities and sporting bodies who wish to engage with those who are hard to reach in their local community. We work together across generations to establish effective solutions on how to target and engage older people. We provide the training and the resources for volunteers and people within these organisations to run groups, making sure they have the knowledge, understanding and skills to deliver meaningful sessions which will benefit participants. So far we have worked with over 400 different organisations and trained over 500 volunteers and members of staff. Our intergenerational work has been a major focus over the last year. With support from the Spirit of 2012 Trust we have been able to work in partnership with schools around the UK.
