There have been some great matches over the years at the Abbey Stadium and also some important ones.
Everyone will have their own favourite. The reasons for choices will be different. It may have been an important victory or because of an experience.
What are your favourite matches?
Below are my top 5 - I will be honest when I started thinking about this, there were probably another dozen I could have included. I could have said my very first match against Yeovil in the Southern League or the Chelsea match however I can not really remember them. As is the case against Lincoln in 1970. I could have included the Plymouth return to the league after so many years watching from the outside. Josh Coulson's goal was certainly special.
My choices are below and you can watch the videos of the games -:
Exeter 2-1 April 1978 - Having won promotion the previous season, Ron Atkinson had left to manage West Brom in January. The U's needed to draw for promotion and succeeded by winning. John Docherty had done it and started what was an incredible period for United and their supporters. John on reflection was probably the most successful coach and manager we have ever had.
Mansfield - 7-2 20th March 1999 - Roy McFarland said, "It looked as though we might score whenever we went forward." It kept us on top of the Third Division. I felt we were unbeatable at the time. We won promotion to Division Two that year but not as champions.
Hereford 2-1 - 16th August 2005 - The first home match following administration. We had made it back to the Abbey after almost folding during the summer.
Stevenage 3 -0 - Having lost to Stevenage 3-1 away - we came back to the Abbey unsure of being able to turn it around. We did and booked a trip to Wembley. It didn't result in promotion that year but we showed a determination and battle against all the odds to win this match.
Newport 4-0 - 7th January 2015 - The last match before Manchester United came to town and when the club changed forever
