Dave Matthews-Jones SLO Programme Article - Plymouth Argyle

This evening we welcome the supporters, officials and playing staff of Plymouth Argyle to the Abbey Stadium. Whenever, there is a match against the Pilgrims my mind will always go back to a Saturday afternoon in August 2014 when Josh Coulson scored the only goal of the match following Cambridge United’s return from the non-league.

Last year, the CUFCLottery paid for the provision of two new scoreboards at the ground. During recent games we have been widening the use of them on match days. If you would like a birthday or special occasion message to be displayed. Requests need to made for a Saturday match by the previous Thursday and for a Tuesday match by the Sunday before the game. They can made by using the contact form via https://www.cambridgefansunited.org/scoreboard.html

I was recently asked about the story behind We’ve a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts. There have been many theories as to why it is played and whatever the reason it will be forever associated with Cambridge United. Some say it was a favoured singalong on supporters' coaches in the 1950s, others that the man in charge of the Tannoy in days gone by was a Billy Cotton fan.

Several year ago 100yearsofcoconuts the club’s heritage group asked U's fans for their memories of Coconuts, and struck gold at the time with the memories of long-term supporter Robin Mansfield.
Robin recalled: 'I was first taken to the United when I was nine in 1955 by a neighbour called Jack Morgan. Jack was the public announcer who had the bright idea of playing I’ve Got A Lovely Bunch Of Coconuts sung by the Billy Cotton Band. It was he who first decided to play that record whenever we had a win.

'I asked Jack why he chose that particular record. His reply was: "It was purely accidental. I had a pile of records in front of me and thought that one would do!" He just carried on playing it and the tradition continues to the present day.'

And so, it does. Whenever the U's win at the Abbey you'll hear the breezy strains of Coconuts at the final whistle.
The song written by Fred Heatherton in 1944 is now as strongly connected with Cambridge United as You'll Never Walk Alone is with Liverpool and I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles is with West Ham.

Away Travel Coach seats can now be booked for the remaining matches this season apart from Sunderland when if there is enough demand we may organise additional coach travel on separate days. For more information you can ring the Away Travel team on 07591 111251 or email them via cfuawaytravel@yahoo.com

It was with sadness that the club recently received the sad news about the passing of Gerald Lowe. He became a director of Cambridge United in September 1990 when the board was brought up to its full complement of eight with his appointment. At the time Gerald was 49 and ran a coal merchant and grocery business with his brother in Thaxted. He had previously been a member of the Vice-Presidents’ Club since its formation in 1970.

In Feb 2002, there was a reorganisation at board level as each director was given responsibility for the different areas of operation. Gerald became retail director, responsible for the club shop, lottery and catering.

Gerald left the board in June 2005, having announced that he would be standing down as part of the restructuring that included the appointments as directors of Nick Pomery and Justyn Medd. Pomery said: “Gerald Lowe is one of life’s true gentlemen. He has made Justyn and I very welcome in the boardroom and his honesty at the AGM in standing up and accepting collective responsibility for the club’s difficult position was humbling.”

Fan Engagement Index 2020/2021

25/2/2022

Picture
Cambridge United scored a second placed finish in the recent Fan Engagement Index, which measures engagement levels across all 92 Clubs in the top five tiers of English Football...

Each club is assessed on their dialogue with supporters, how supporters are represented as part of the club's governance and how transparent the club is with their supporters.

It's a one place jump for the U's who finished third in the 2019/20 table and the news further demonstrates United's culture of Fan Engagement and its commitment to supporters.
Picture
The Fan Engagement Index awards up to 240 points to clubs overall based on the quality of their Fan Engagement. It comprises three categories, each offering up to 80 points. Final figures correct as of the 31st of May of the end of the season concerned.

As this season was affected by Covid-19, and in the case of the EFL League One and League Two, saw no more competitive fixtures played in the normal (league) season after early March, reasonable assumptions have been made in the scoring. Specifically, it has been assumed that where a club commenced a programme of engagement (e.g. had at least one Fans Parliament, Fans Forum or Structured Dialogue with a Supporters Trust/Independent Group before football stopped in March 2020), they would have had the remaining one required by best practice/EFL rules. This applies to the publishing of any reports, agendas and minutes. This does not apply where no such meetings were held before March 2020.

Each category is broken down into a number of areas making up the total score for the category. As follows:

Dialogue (the meetings and processes in place to practice two-way communication with their fanbase and its representatives)
Structured Dialogue with supporters’ trust/independent supporters group
Structured Dialogue with wider group of representatives
Fans Forums
Social Media (does the club have a Twitter Help Channel or a Twitter SLO Channel)
Any other Dialogue initiatives/innovations

Governance (what underpins, or reinforces these relationships)
Are there supporter directors on the board of the club?
Customer/Club/Supporter Charter: rating based on whether it’s easy to find, and contains information about the SLO, fan consultation, and supporter/customer services
Whether or not the SLO is clearly a ‘stand alone’ role at the club
Is there a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) or other legal agreement with supporters’ trust or other independent group governing their relationship?

Transparency (what they publish in relation to this dialogue)
  • Are reports or minutes published of structured dialogue meetings with supporters’ trust/independent group and/or its structured dialogue with a wider group of representatives?
  • Are agendas published in advance of any of these meetings?
  • Are reports or minutes published of fans forums? Are agendas published in advance of fans forums?
  • Does the club report on its board meetings? Does the club publish an agenda in advance of its board meetings?

Dave Matthews-Jones SLO Programme Article - Accrington Stanley

Picture
This afternoon we welcome the supporters, officials and playing staff of Accrington Stanley to the Abbey Stadium. In the late 1960’s I was given a book which showed a turnstile that had been left derelict. It was from Accrington’s original ground. The photograph has always remained in my mind and is a constant reminder to me of how important it is that everyone works together to ensure their clubs not only survive but also flourish. The work and dedication of those involved and ensured Accrington were able to both re-form and then rise back through the leagues can only be admired. It was a remarkable achievement. Accrington are proof of what can be achieved when everyone works together as one.

In addition to Accrington supporters, we also welcome Pippa Luo Sawyer. She is 6 years old and today will be her first visit to the Abbey Stadium. Families and children are a really important part of match day experience at the Abbey Stadium. They are the future of the club. All supporters need to ensure that when visiting the ground, the atmosphere remains positive and at the end of the matchday  those families and individuals coming for the first time will leave wanting to come back again. We need them to tell their friends & family that Cambridge United is a football club that they can be proud to visit and one that welcomes everyone to it.

Cambridge United have a zero tolerance of discrimination. Recently, there have been several incidents reported and it really important we eliminate them together. It is everyone’s responsibility to do whatever they can to achieve that. If there is an incident report it to a steward or ring the hotline

The Away travel for the following matches can now be booked

1st March -- Wycombe Wanderers
12th March - Sheffield Wednesday
26th March - AFC Wimbledon

To order a seat book via https://www.cambridgefansunited.org/away-travel.html

We are also pleased to be offering ladies sanitary products in selected toilets around the ground for the rest of the seaason. Tesco Newmarket Road, Cambridge & Cambridge Charity Fund Raisers have agreed to sponsor female toiletries for the next 7 matches at the Abbey stadium. In the photograph is Ian Darler, Ian Westwood Manager Tesco Newmarket Rd, Julie Izzard Community. We would like to thank Tesco's for their support

There is still a need for more Abbey Helpers and programme sellers on match days. If you are interested in helping or know someone who might be, please contact me 07703274034 or dave.matthew-jones@cambridge-united.co.uk These roles are important and really improve the match experience. They are often the first people that supporters meet and it is really important that this contact is a friendly, warm and informative one.

Dave Matthews-Jones SLO Programme Article - Luton

14/2/2022

This afternoon we welcome the supporters, officials and playing staff of Luton to the Abbey Stadium. Following the excitement of playing against and winning at Newcastle in the last round we have been rewarded with a home tie. For me the glamour and excitement of the FA Cup still holds a special place in my football heart. When I was young the draw was always held on a Monday dinner time and broadcasted live on the radio. There was real excitement when the numbers were being drawn and anticipation concerning who you be drawn against. I remember queueing for tickets along Newmarket Road and down Barnwell Road to get tickets for a match against Aston Villa. Now the draws are on TV and the tickets are sold on line it seems a bygone time.

It was of interest recently when I heard the news that Trevor George had been selected to play for the England Over 65s. Trevor nowadays works in the control box on matchdays and has been associated with the club since childhood. His father Albert played for both Abbey & Cambridge United up to the mid 1950’s. The Community Trust promote and organise the participation of sport across all ages. If you want to take part in any of these projects, contact them via 01223 632129 their line is open 9-5 Monday to Friday or email communitytrust@cambridge-united.co.uk

Margaret and Frank Pearson are volunteers who help Ian Darler at the club. I wonder if we can help them with their campaign to raise money and awareness concerning MNGIE – a rare genetic disorder (only 200 documented cases worldwide), They have written the following - It has affected our 3 daughters Gail, Zillah and Verity. Thankfully it has missed their son Owen.

There is currently no treatment and no cure. Gail died of pneumonia this time last year – we last stood with her in the Habbin at those Covid restricted games in December 2020. How she would have revelled in promotion!

Then this January, Verity contracted pneumonia. Her husband was already working behind the scenes, contacting medics, researchers and an enzyme manufacturing company in order to set up a trial treatment for Verity and Zillah based at St. George's Hospital, London. They have been given the go-ahead. But no funding. So, he needs to raise £500,000…….

He explains it all clearly on a JustGiving page he has set up, hoping to fund this treatment and people have responded well – we are very grateful to each and every one. However, it is such a huge amount that we really need all the help we can get. If you can't donate, could you possibly pass the link on to others please?

For anyone, like us, who uses real money and would like to donate, we still stand at the front of the Habbin and will pass any donations on to them.

Please help spread the word or make a donation via the justgiving page www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/compassionate-treatment-for-mngie?utm_id=1&utm_term=W5yPw3RVG

PAY FOR YOUR SEAT ON THE AWAY TRAVEL COACH TO GILLINGHAM HERE

Gillingham Football Club
MEMS Priestfield Stadium
Redfern Avenue
Gillingham
Kent
ME7 2PE
Tel: 01634 300000

Website --- www.gillinghamfootballclub.com/

Finding MEMS Priestfield Stadium:

By Road from the South:
Exit the M2 at junction 4 onto the A278. Follow signs for Gillingham driving over two roundabouts before taking the first exit off the third roundabout onto the A2. Continue until you come to the next roundabout (Premier Inn to your left) and take the third exit onto the A289. At the first roundabout take the first exit onto Cornwallis Avenue. Continue along Cornwallis Avenue over the traffic lights before turning right into Toronto Road. Take the second left off Toronto into Redfern Avenue, where you will see the Priestfield Stadium on your left.

By Road from the North:
Exit A2 at junction 1 (M2) onto the A289. Follow signs for Medway Tunnel. After about three miles take the second exit off the roundabout, again following signs towards Medway Tunnel. At the next roundabout take the first exit. At the next roundabout take the first exit into the Tunnel. On exit follow the A289 over two sets of traffic lights before coming to the Strand roundabout. Take the third exit onto Church Street. Drive up the hill and continue over the level crossing. Take the second left after the crossing and follow Linden Drive to the end. Turn right into Redfern Avenue, where you will see the MEMS Priestfield Stadium on your right.

By Rail:
The fastest way for many visiting supporters travelling to the MEMS Priestfield Stadium will be on Southeastern's High Speed service from St Pancras. The service, which will typically stop at Stratford International, Ebbsfleet International, takes around 40 minutes. However, because it is Southeastern's flagship service, tickets cost more than those to Gillingham from other London termini.
When a full service is running, four trains per hour depart from London Victoria, two of which will typically take 50 minutes, the other around 70.
There are also direct services to Gillingham from Charing Cross via Dartford, but because of ongoing refurbishment at London Bridge station, fans travelling from there are likely to have to change at Charlton.
Times are approximate and may vary from weekdays to weekend days; away supporters are advised to check in advance in case of any engineering work.
On leaving Gillingham station turn left on to Balmoral Road. Walk for about five minutes down Balmoral Road until you come to the end. Straight opposite Balmoral Road you will see Priestfield Road. The away turnstiles are located at the top of Priestfield Road. The walk from the station should take no longer than 10 minutes.
If you are a home supporter, at the end of Balmoral Road turn left, and then take the next right (past Sainsbury's) and walk to the very end of the road, turn to your right and you will come out on Redfern Avenue.
Parking:
This is restricted to roads surrounding the Stadium but visiting supporters should note that the following roads are restricted to permit holders only. A list of roads to avoid are as follows: Balmoral Road, Windsor Road, Ferndale Road, Linden Avenue, Priestfield Road, Gordon Road, Livingstone Road, Coulman Street, Beaconsfield Avenue, Harold Avenue, School Lane, Toronto Road, Redfern Avenue and parts of Sunnymead Avenue.

Traffic Wardens often undertake patrols on matchdays so it is strongly recommended you choose alternative parking areas. Suggested alternatives include: eastern end of Sunnymead Avenue, Chicago Avenue, Canadian Avenue, Valley Road, Sturdee Avenue, Woodlands Road, Carlton Avenue, Alexandra Avenue, Larkfield Avenue, Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue.

Woodlands Primary School has offered the use of its car parks for supporters' use. Its 100-plus spaces will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at £5 each from 1.30pm for every Saturday match until the end of the season. Please note that the car park is not available outside of the football season and anyone parking there over the summer is liable to find their car locked inside the school.

Staff will be on hand to assist with the arrangements, but will close at 6pm.

Visiting Supporters Coaches:
All coaches should set down supporters at the Croneens Yard car park which is situated in Railway Street. It is a five-minute walk from here back along Gillingham Road to the away supporters entrance at the Priestfield Road Turnstile.
***To ensure supporters' safety, coach drivers and away teams are asked not to attempt to set down or pick up supporters from Redfern Avenue.

Are there any known traffic issues en route to the Stadium? There are some traffic issues happening every direction coming into the ground so I would advise all fans to look at apple/google maps in preparation on planning their trip.

Please give details of pre-match venue for away fans (Will our supporters be able to use your club house, or do they need to make other arrangements)? Fleur De Lis is the Away Pub located on 46 Gillingham Rd, Gillingham ME7 4RR

We are regularly asked for teamsheets on matchdays  by supporters of both sides.  We have launched  Programme  on a Page. this season. It is a combination  of a team sheet and  programme on one sheet of paper. It can be downloaded on matchdays or have on your mobile device to read. We hope you enjoy it and find the information useful.

The latest copy is now available to download  below or at the Programme Exchange outlet  (outside the club shop) before the  match against  Luton please take a copy or it can be downloaded or read by expanding the document below

Copes are free while stocks are available to download or collect.

We also provide picturepath that helps reduce anxiety for children with SEN when coming to the Abbey Stadium https://cambridgefansunited.org/how-to-use-picture-path.html…
