This evening we welcome the supporters, officials and playing staff of Plymouth Argyle to the Abbey Stadium. Whenever, there is a match against the Pilgrims my mind will always go back to a Saturday afternoon in August 2014 when Josh Coulson scored the only goal of the match following Cambridge United’s return from the non-league.
Last year, the CUFCLottery paid for the provision of two new scoreboards at the ground. During recent games we have been widening the use of them on match days. If you would like a birthday or special occasion message to be displayed. Requests need to made for a Saturday match by the previous Thursday and for a Tuesday match by the Sunday before the game. They can made by using the contact form via https://www.cambridgefansunited.org/scoreboard.html I was recently asked about the story behind We’ve a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts. There have been many theories as to why it is played and whatever the reason it will be forever associated with Cambridge United. Some say it was a favoured singalong on supporters' coaches in the 1950s, others that the man in charge of the Tannoy in days gone by was a Billy Cotton fan. Several year ago 100yearsofcoconuts the club’s heritage group asked U's fans for their memories of Coconuts, and struck gold at the time with the memories of long-term supporter Robin Mansfield. Robin recalled: 'I was first taken to the United when I was nine in 1955 by a neighbour called Jack Morgan. Jack was the public announcer who had the bright idea of playing I’ve Got A Lovely Bunch Of Coconuts sung by the Billy Cotton Band. It was he who first decided to play that record whenever we had a win. 'I asked Jack why he chose that particular record. His reply was: "It was purely accidental. I had a pile of records in front of me and thought that one would do!" He just carried on playing it and the tradition continues to the present day.' And so, it does. Whenever the U's win at the Abbey you'll hear the breezy strains of Coconuts at the final whistle. The song written by Fred Heatherton in 1944 is now as strongly connected with Cambridge United as You'll Never Walk Alone is with Liverpool and I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles is with West Ham. Away Travel Coach seats can now be booked for the remaining matches this season apart from Sunderland when if there is enough demand we may organise additional coach travel on separate days. For more information you can ring the Away Travel team on 07591 111251 or email them via cfuawaytravel@yahoo.com To book a seat use https://www.cambridgefansunited.org/away-travel.html It was with sadness that the club recently received the sad news about the passing of Gerald Lowe. He became a director of Cambridge United in September 1990 when the board was brought up to its full complement of eight with his appointment. At the time Gerald was 49 and ran a coal merchant and grocery business with his brother in Thaxted. He had previously been a member of the Vice-Presidents’ Club since its formation in 1970. In Feb 2002, there was a reorganisation at board level as each director was given responsibility for the different areas of operation. Gerald became retail director, responsible for the club shop, lottery and catering. Gerald left the board in June 2005, having announced that he would be standing down as part of the restructuring that included the appointments as directors of Nick Pomery and Justyn Medd. Pomery said: “Gerald Lowe is one of life’s true gentlemen. He has made Justyn and I very welcome in the boardroom and his honesty at the AGM in standing up and accepting collective responsibility for the club’s difficult position was humbling.” You can contact me via dave.matthew-jones@cambridge-united.co.uk or follow what is happening via the www.facebook.com/CambridgeUnitedFootballClub facebook site www.cambridgefansunited.org website or via twitter SLO@CambridgeUTD Be Loud, Be Proud and Be United.
