Cambridge United Football Club are seeking to recruit Accommodation Providers for youth team players in the local area as part of our host family provision...
Lodgings should provide good quality accommodation in a designated area providing a safe, family environment for young people aged 16-21 who may be moving away from home for the first time. This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a young person’s journey. Accommodation location requires easy access to the Abbey Stadium and to Clare College Sportsground by bike or by public transport. Accommodation will generally be required from a Sunday evening until Saturday morning during the football season, with a break over Christmas and throughout June. If you believe you can provide such an environment for our younger footballers then please contact Glenn Quirke, the Safeguarding & Welfare Officer by email to glennq@cambridgeunited.com for further information and a potential visit to assess the suitability of the lodging area. Cambridge United Football Club is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all Accommodation Providers to share this commitment. Accommodating young people is subject to police Criminal Records Checks (CRC) via the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) and additional safeguarding training with the club. This will include vetting at the highest level. In addition, Accommodation Providers may need to demonstrate that the accommodation meets certain safety standards.

Photos by Simon King. This afternoon we welcome the supporters, officials and playing staff of Morecambe to the Abbey Stadium. We also welcome some of our former players including Hall of Famers Derrick Christie, Steve Fallon, Tom Finney and Malcolm Webster who will be joined by Keith Lockhart, Richard Key and Andy Hollis in the Signature Suite. Why not say hello to them after the match. All supporters from all of home stands are welcomed to use the facility after every match, so why not arrange to meet friends and family in there for a drink today or after future games.
When the club celebrated it centenary in 2012 one of the events to celebrate this occassion was to create a club museum. At the time there wasn’t any room to create a permanent location, so I set about setting up an online one called. It is still on line at www.100yearsofcoconuts.co.uk so have a look. During the following years with the help of the Heritage Lottery Fund and a small but dedicated group of individuals the museum has grown in size and now has a permanent location in addition to the on-line site. If you have never seen or visited the museum it is situated inside the Supporters Club and well worth a visit. In addition to what is on shown there are on-line databases to maintain for example a complete list of matches since the club’s formation and a collection of programmes. It is hoped that one day coconuts will have a complete collection of Abbey United and Cambridge United programmes. Most of the programmes since 1970 are now in place, however there are still gaps in the collection before that date. Particularly rare are the Abbey United and early fifties programmes. If you are aware of any please contact the group via 100yearsofcoconuts@gmail.com One particular individual Andrew Bennett was a real inspiration to the group. We were very fortunate to have him involved in the project. Andrew sadly passed away, however, he left behind an incredible legacy with his books, databases and match day reports. It was through all his work that the Coconuts & Celery book series was produced. Without the research he carried out there would never have been a permanent written history of the club. There are now plans in place for the next edition to be released shortly. At the beginning of the article, we mentioned the Hall of Fame. The HOF recognises individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the development, success and history of Cambridge United. These are not just players but also those who have worked in the background of the club helping to make difference. There are now 41 inductees and their details can be found on line at http://www.cuhalloffame.org.uk/index.php To ensure that 100yearsofcoconut museum continues to grow and maintain the level of information/artifacts it needs new blood to maintain and keep it alive. If you have a love of history either as a volunteer or a fellow supporter wanting to be involved contact the group via the email above. History needs to be kept and for it to continue into the future it needs the baton to be handed on from one generation to the next, otherwise the memories and store it will be lost forever This afternoon we welcome the supporters, officials and playing staff of Portsmouth to the Abbey Stadium. The match this afternoon is also raising awareness of International Women’s Day which takes place on the 8th March. The day brings about attention in the women's rights movement to issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women.
Cambridge United has been fortunate that throughout its history we have had female supporters who have driven the club forwards from its earliest days to the modern day. The club could never have achieved what it has without them. Nowadays, we have female representation on the Shadow Board through the Amber Belles, on the club board via Jenny Horsfield. Throughout the club women play a vital part in its day-to-day organisation. The Women’s football team now has its own board which feeds into the main club board and also comes under the management of Ben Strang as does the first team. Today, I would like to remember the work of Lil Harrison. Lil is someone whose name is no longer remembered or known by many supporters. However, without her drive and ambition our club would never be where it is today. She should not be forgotten. From the days before the Great War, when the club played the likes of the Sons of Temperance and the University Press Third XI, until her death in 1996, Lil Harrison’s support for Abbey United and Cambridge United was unsurpassed. During those years, Lil worked tirelessly and celebrated its raise from Cambridgeshire League to the Football League. From amateur football to professionalism. She was the backbone of the club. Her fundraising work and support was incredible. She furnished the clubhouse almost single-handedly, paying for a hundred tables and chairs out of husband Charlie’s bank account – without his knowledge – and then held raffles each week to pay it back. It is possible he never knew. Not that he would have minded. The couple had met when Charlie was on the Abbey United committee and they married in 1928. He was equally devoted to the U’s. Lil was the driving force behind the Ladies’ Committee that raised money for the Habbin and Corona stands, the floodlights and even players’ kits. Her Christmas raffles were extraordinary, legendary affairs. The only dream of Lil’s that didn’t come true was her vision of seeing United play in the top division. Her visits to the Abbey tailed off in the early 1990s, but her spirit is evoked every time someone sells a draw ticket or yells their support from the stands. We remember Harry Habbin with a plaque on the Habbin Stand. Perhaps we should honour Lil in the way same so she never forgotten. Cambridge United supporters can you see yourself in the photos from the Portsmouth match on display in the slideshow below Her Game Too… Keep scrolling, the rest of you are at the bottom of our Fans Gallery. We also welcome all Cambridge United supporters coming to the match.
The Audio For All team of volunteers has taken two big steps forward this season at Cambridge United thanks to new equipment and the creation of a proper base – the Accessibility Point behind the Newmarket Road end. The descriptive service is offered to anyone who may benefit – not just the visually impaired – while the Accessibility Point offers support services for anyone with additional needs, be they physical or sensory. The new audio equipment came via a donation from the club’s CUFCLottery https://www.cufclottery.co.uk/ , replacing kit which was donated second-hand when the service was launched in 2011. Fans using the service will hear the action de-scribed by a trained volunteer via a receiver and earpiece. Sensory packs are available for fans of any age who would benefit from one. These include noise-cancelling headphones, sensory balls, sunflower sticker to wear and a sheet of puzzles. Information on the stadium’s Picture Pathway App is also available. Audio sets and headphones must be returned to the Accessibility Point after use. All of the above is provided by volunteers with the backing of the club. Point of contact: Nick Parker (AFA co-ordinator) 07929 589925 nick.parker56@googlemail.com or visit the Supporter Accessibility page on the club’s website https://www.cambridgeunited.com/fans/accessibility/ We also need to congratulate the Cambridge United Youth side in securing their place in the FA Youth Cup Quarter-Final following the win against Sheffield Wednesday, I would like to wish them every success in the tie against Arsenal at the Emirates next week. At the time of writing there are 1500 supporters travelling to support the side. Thank you to everyone who is going to the game. Remember be Loud, Proud and United in your support. It is an exceptional turn out and reminds me of when we played against Arsenal at Highbury in the FA Cup Quarter Final. Many supporters travelled on the day to find out that the tickets had sold out for the match on their arrival and couldn’t get in. This evening we welcome the supporters, officials and playing staff of Cheltenham to the Abbey Stadium. Thank you to everyone who has travelled to the Abbey Stadium for the match.
One of the most positive and encouraging initiatives to commence in the past twelve months has been the creation of the Cambridge Aces. All clubs look at improving the match day atmosphere and this group is definitely ticking all the boxes at the moment. It is important we build on the enthusiasm and energy of younger supporters and allow them the opportunity. Please give them your support and encouragement. Below is your chance to get to know learn more about them. Hello, we are the Cambridge Aces. We set up the group last year whilst talking to the club about how to add more colour and atmosphere to the Abbey during matches, including crowd surfer flags for big games, such as the ones we had last year against Luton and recently against Ipswich, having flag bearers to wave the three flags we have at the front of the Newmarket Road End, aiming to reintroduce the flags on staffs we had during the Conference Days and organising displays before big games, such as “that” fixture coming up in April. We are coming up to the business end of the season where the boys need our support as much as possible to help them achieve another season in League One. Where we belong! The atmosphere and ambiance during the Ipswich game was electric and we need to be like that every game to ensure the team can get their confidence back. We are looking at raising money over the next few months to help fund a display that will hopefully incorporate the Main Stand as well as the NRE to welcome the team out for the first Cambridgeshire League derby since December 2001, and as a group we will be releasing more information in the coming months. We are still actively looking for anyone who would be interested in volunteering or getting involved with what we are trying to do at the Abbey so if you are wanting to be a part of this, or would like to give your opinion or share some ideas for flags with us, then please contact us through Twitter or Instagram (@cambridgeaces for both) or come speak to one of us on a matchday! You’ll normally find us around the NRE Fanzone before a game so please come say hi. We are incredibly excited and honoured to be doing this and look forward to helping turn the Abbey into a fortress again. Forever, United in Endeavour. Thank you for reading. Connor, Tom & Shamz This afternoon we welcome the supporters, officials and playing staff of Ipswich Town to the Abbey Stadium for the second time this season. It is a match with many supporters of both clubs either knowing or living close to each other. Many will even be family members, so I hope it is a good-natured affair both on and off the pitch.
As SLO at Cambridge United I am involved with the Cambridgeshire FA Equality Diversity and Inclusion Committee. It enables Cambridgeshire FA to consult with its diverse communities, and ensures that the services provided meet any gaps in provision. The committee’s purpose is to: • Maintain a strategic overview of County FA work from an inclusion perspective. • Support the County FA in their design, planning and consultation of county plans and development plans. • Review, monitor and scrutinise all County FA programmes from an inclusion perspective. • Receive and comment on inclusion assessments of key aspects of County FA work. • Provide advice and support about the following: • Community engagement • Proactive interventions to address gaps in equality and inclusion • Embedding inclusion into the county planning process • Enhancing development programmes for inclusion • Supporting the County FA with the continuous recruitment to Local Football AntiDiscrimination Panels • Abide by the County FA Codes of Conduct • Attend and represent EDI on committees and at Board via the EDI Committee Chair. • Provide advice and support where relevant on fine-tuning disciplinary procedures to support good practice on handling allegations of discrimination. • Support the County FA in the development of specific campaign work with targeted communities. Funds of £3,916 for a new Digital Aural Aide system have also been provided, as the acclaimed Audio for All service will receive a much-needed upgrade. Home and away supporters with a visual impairment, additional sensory needs or the elderly can receive audio-descriptive commentary courtesy of the Audio for All team. Expertly trained volunteer fans of Cambridge United provide a highly professional, neutral and entertaining match description for free of charge. The existing Audio for All kit will be donated to a local football club. In addition to this, a new wireless access point is being installed in the soon-to-be completed Newmarket Road End Fan Zone in-order to efficiently take payments in the food and drink kiosks. £880 has been donated from CUFC Lottery to help pay for the system. The contributions from CUFC Lottery supports the club’s ability to enhance the fan experience at the Abbey Stadium, building on the recently funded Wi-Fi and PA system improvements at the ground. Carl Badcock of CUFC Lottery said, “We are only too pleased to support the Club with projects that benefits the fans, improving Matchday experiences at the Abbey. In the case of Audio for All, this represents a great project which ticks all the boxes of what CUFC Lottery is all about. “We are a small, agile and reactive committee, able to support and facilitate speedy outcomes.” Cambridge United SLO, Dave Matthew-Jones added, “The drive to improve and modernise the Matchday experience for supporters is one of the main priorities at Cambridge United. The Abbey Stadium facilities have changed very little over the past 20 years and therefore, we are having to play catch-up across all areas of the stadium. “The Club is extremely grateful for all the support the lottery members and the committee provide to ensure these projects can be successfully completed.” I make no apology in copying the update directly from the club website. The wording does encapsulate the best scenario on the use of lottery funds. Nick Parker and his band of die-hards have provided a well loved and necessary service to fans - home and away - for many years. Making the beautiful game available to anyone to access. I say more power to your elbow Nick! As usual we are grateful for any feedback from our members although I didn't feel very agile when one of the sprinklers caught me at a recent home game when I was working on the pitch. It gave Ian D something to laugh at. Thank goodness for waterproof trousers! It is also the first opportunity to wish everyone a happy, healthy and prosperous 2023.
Looking back on 2022 there was so much achieved by everyone involved with Cambridge United to be proud of. From winning against Premiership side Newcastle United at St James Park in early January to the re-purchase of the Abbey Stadium in September. From the creation of the Family Zone to the improvements in all of the supporter areas around the ground. Giant strides have been made both on and off the pitch and these are laying the foundations for future years. Looking at some of the databases we keep, I noticed that during the first weeks of 2013 we were playing Braintree, Stockport and Nuneaton in the Blue Square Premiership during the past week we have played away at Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday. Competing against teams of this size is difficult at the best of times and is made even more difficult when the rules are being constantly changed to favour them. Football should be played by sides with equal opportunities but the recent substitution rule changes is another example to ensure it favours the larger clubs. It is the latest of many changes going back over many years and it won’t be the last one for sure. Since the club achieved promotion supporters have followed the side all over the country. Sometimes watching them win and sometimes in defeat, however the support is both valued and appreciated by everyone on the playing side. It is therefore disappointing to see how badly supporters travelling to away matches can be treated. A recent example of this was the Fleetwood match. At a time of year when finances are already tight and during a period of time when families and individuals are struggling. To see a match that involved such travel costs and time called off at mid-day is difficult to accept. We are not the only club to suffer. It is certainly an area those running football and pushing the Fans Led Review should consider in future looking into. What actions could still have been taken in the following three hours to get the match on? What thought was given to those travelling at the time of the initial inspection? Why are matches of distance not scheduled during months of better weather. Should there be a report made public giving the reasons for a postponement so supporters can actually see why and what has been done? The goodwill donation back to those who did travel by the club should be applauded there was no reason the give one. They did so because they care about their supporters. The Away Travel coach fully refunded their travellers for their costs but are now considerably out of pocket on the trip. It could possibly affect future trips being run at a time when the club will need support away from home. If you are interested in or could sponsorship the away travel, contact them via 07591 111251 or Email cfuawaytravel@yahoo.com Did you have a scoreboard announcement on Saturday at the match against Bristol Rovers?
